STARTLE IN EASY TRIUMPH Wins the Rich Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes in Fast Time. : - 1 Whitney Stable Takes Second Money with Rocket and John Finn Finishes Third. 1 LOUISVILLE, Ky., October 15. The West triumphed over the East this afternoon in the running of Kentuckys richest two-year-old prize, the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes at one mile, when H. H. Hewitts Startle, sterling daughter of Star Hawk Inspiration, beat Rocket, coupled with Cherry Tree as the n. P. Whitney entry home in easy fashion, John Finn following, with Cherry Tree iu fourth place. The mile was covered iu 1:38. Connelly rode the winner faultlessly. He kept her iu closest attendance on Rocket, the early leader, and when the Whitney colt showed signs of fatigue. Startle passed him in a flash and through the last eighth was well prepared for challenges from the others, but it was unnecessary for her to be extended again, as she was mistress of the situation. Rocket, although tiring near the end, held John Finn safe. The latter met with some interference, of which Lunsford complained to the stewards. A more wholesome and interesting "days racing lias not been presented this year than that which furnished a splendid setting for tho big fixture which, had .its decision this afternoon and enthused an attendance that was little short of a local record and included some of the most prominent persons in Kentucky. Weather . and track . condi-t tions were perfect. A more delightful day could not be made to order. Opinion as to the outcome was divided, all the starters excepting Red Leaf and College Girl being accorded extensive support. the favorites, John Finn and Horologe being quoted equally" at better than 4 to 1. Robinsons timidity and the interference the colt suffered from was re-1 sponsible for Horologes elimination early in the race and once, knocked out of a good chance,1 he never recovered and finished far back. The showing of June Grass in the race was not a fair test of his capability. Carroll rode him in a style that was not up to the best standard. With a better ride he might have been a more dangerous contender. The gross value of the stakes amounted to 5,695. The winners net share was 2,175. Rocket received ,500, John Finn 00 and by virtue of finishing fourth Cherry Tree saved his stakes, amounting, to 35. The original nominator of Startle to the race received 00, Rockets nominator 50 and John Finns ?1C0. By her victory this afternoon Startle showed that she is justly entitled to rank with the best of her age. It marked her second important stake victory this fall, having previously accounted for the Queen City Handicap and sending her total winnings for this year above the 0,000 mark. HIGH COST BOWS TO AMERICAN ACE. While the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes was the headliner on todays card, the handicap prc- ceding it was not without considerable interest and furnished an upset when High Cost was beaten by American Ace. High Costs undoing was attributable to Fair Phantom. The two-year-old forcwl him to race at a terrific pace from the start and it found him tiring when American Ace came with a great rush after having suffered a considerablo loss of ground, as a result of running out on the stretch turn. Peter Piper, the only other starter in the race, ran a poor race, though waiting tactics were employed with him today. Fair Phantoms performance, though a losing one, was highly credlt-. able and it was due to her terrific pace making that the race was run in 1:11, the fastest thrce-. quarters of the present meeting. The mile dash found Montfort Jones Brookholt adding another purse to the many earned thi" year by the stable in Kentucky. His success was scored in hollow style, jockey Keogh never being called on to extend him. Lady Madcap, after a hard tussle, outstayed Bullet Proof. It remained for the closing dash to furnish tho most interesting contest of the day and it brought victory to Honolulu Boy over Paris Maid by a nose, with Wickford closely in their rear. Honolulu Boy seemed all out of condition when going to the post, but he ran in his best style and forgot all about his infirmities. Rapid Day Anally succeeded in capturing a purse and ho did so at great cost to those who had faitli in Rcdmon, an overwhelming favorite. Treasurer was the best of the maidens that contended in the second race, the unlucky Lieut. Col- onel, not much of a race horse at that, finishing second and Settle third. Brother John was again 11 disappointment here. The change from Taylor to Kcderis worked an advantage in Young Adams running, judging by the improvement shown over his last race. Hi just managed to beat the poorly managed Dr. Rao home, with Guaranteed in third place. James Rowe, Jr., did not tarry long with tho charges he brought to compete in the stake: race and imniedaitely after it was decided he had the colts led away and loaded on a car waiting for their reception. They were at once whisked away and started on their return journey to Laurel. Jockeys Penman and Coltilctti went along at the same time. Jockey Keogh, who rode Rockminister, also returned east tonight. Rockministers pretentions to greatness was exploded this afternoon. S. K. Eddy was among the visitors from New Orleans this afternoon. He stated that the racing situation in the Crescent City is serene and that construction work at the Fair Grounds in the way of improving the plant is going along steadily. When completed the plant will present an entirely new appearance. Supervision of the work will keep manager R. S. Eddy, Jr., in New Orleans this fall, Robert Browner returned this morning from Now Orleans, wherts he had gone on the sad mission of taking the remains of jockey Porretto home. The funeral of the jockey was held in the Crescent City this morning. 1
