I ; | NEW 0,000 steeplechase! Charles L. Appleton Memorial Cup Event to Be Run at Belmont Park in Spring. A steeplechase is being arranged as | tribute to the memory of the late Charles L. AVaattetea, whose sputstnaiishir for many years brought him into prominence as cue of those sincerely interested in anything pertaining to the upbuilding of racing in ali its branches. The tribute will take tie-fxrin of a steeplechase to have its first running next -priig and 1o be known as the Charles A. Apple-on Memorial Cup Steeplechase. The race is to be run at Belmont Park under the auspices of the Westchester Kacing Association. The race will be tendered under conditions which. it i- believed, will suit all grades of jumpers. The di-ance is to be two miles. The sponsors of the race will jointly contribute for its inauguration $."i.OOO. which, with the 83,888 which will be guaranteed by the Westchester Racing Association, will give it a value of 1 18, 883, making it one of the richest of American eiaaa-coaatry events. In addition to the money value the Oreentree Stable will donate a suitable piece of plate, which is to be retained by the owner of the winner each year until the subsequent running of the event, with a replica of the plate a- the abso-I late i roperty of the owner of the winner of each event. From those who have been consulted as lo the proposed race has come unqualified approval and support. While he lived Mr. Appleton was known and re spected by all connected with turf affairs. His fondness for steeplechasing and its betterment brought him in contact not alone with owners, but with trainers, jockeys and all down the list to the man that rubs a horse. He loved racing for sports sake and this iribnte proposed by his friends, unusual as it may seem, bespeaks the appreciation of his sportsmanship.
