AMERICAN 1921 RACING STATISTICS GRAND TOTAL OF ,435,083 DISTRIBUTED IN STAKES AND PURSES, SURPASSING ALL PREVIOUS RECORDS ON NORTH AMERICAN TURF laspectioa of the Baal returns of North Amrrlcaa racing for the year litJl reveals ■ magnificent showing. Par the rirst time in the history of the turf north of Panama a grand total of nearly eight and oae-balf millions of dollars was distributed SBMMH] winning owners. This dwarfs the eStTCspsadhag returns in other lands where racing flourishes, hut it is in harmony with the great wealth and dignity of the Tinted States and Canada. The previous year had shown a vast increase over the total of 191!. bat this vv.,s in large part accounted far by the return of Canada and the Tijuana tracks to the fold of racing. Similarly the big gain of pMt.df over U0I in 1921 is in part due to the revival of racing in British Columbia and Pennsylvania, bat also reprc seats a healthy increase in stakes and purses on the part of older and loag-catsbHshed racing organizations. With the spirit of progress still in active life, it is not at all improbable that the .0,000,000 mark will be atlained within a few years, provided, always, that adverse legislation does not intervene to spoil this fair and sleaahag prospect. Dafortaaately enemies of the aoble apart are pressiag actively la the congress of the Tnited states and the legislature of Kentucky to bring about enactments loskiag to it- destruction. However, a favorable enactment by the legislature of Nebraska may in time make Omaha an important racing point, and by tolerame a hopeful beginning was made ia Ohio in 1921. In 1!»L1 there was an lacreaae over lillO in number of racing days and number of races run. Tall I teas, together with the gain in money output, is shown in the following eomparativo statement of the records of these features since IMS; Racing Races Racing Races Year. Distribution. Days.
