CAPT. PEELS RACING HONOR English Sportsman Returns Big Winnings Over Paragon to Bookies. LONDON. England. January .".—Captain Owen Peel, a wealthy racing man. has refunded some 7. 000 to forty-five bookmakers— money won from them by backing Paragon, running at Kempton Park, in the one and one-quarter mile Duke of Yorks Handicap. October S. last. The money was returned on a nice point of honor. Captain Peel sent forty-five telegrams from Leamington, the last being timed at _:47 p. m.. whereas the race was run at 2:50. Though some of the telegrams were not delivered until two hours later 1 the bookmakers all paid up. Paragon was at a long price, averaging about 12Vi to 1. He wai ridden by Balding and won after a desperate finish by a abort head from Abbots Trace. The bookmakers who received the delayed telegrams complained to the postoffice authorities. and on hearing this Peel decided to refund all such 1 Winnings. Frauds on bookmakers by collusion between backers " and telegraph operators by ante-timing telegraphed " bets have occurred, and although there is ! no suggestion of anything of the kind in this case Peel decided that lie was in honor bound to refund the money.
