e _ DERBY AND PREAKNESS DATE Colonel Winn Gives Reasons for Derby Day -Maryland Courtesy May Solve It. NEW YORK. N. Y., March 2. Colonel M. J. Winn has gone hack to Kentucky to check up the Derby entries, delayed for California and Cuban contributions. There are some hundred or so in the 0,000 added Ijiuisville event. The cutrie; v ill be issued at the end of the week. It is rather unfortunate that both the Kentucky Derby of Louisville and Preakncss Stakes of Baltimore, the greatest three -year old events of the year, are dated to be run Saturday, May 13. Colonel Winn declared that the Derby date, long established as the Saturday closest to May 10. could not be changed on account of general arrangements in connection with the making of it the great event of the western racing year. rimlico may change the Prcaknes.s date to May 6. though this is unlikely. Such a change would be most courteous and sportsmanlike oil the Maryland Jockey Clubs part. If, however, both race; are to be run on Saturday. May 13. there are plenty of three-year-olds to fill and race for the eastern or western prize as their owners may choose.
