TRAINING NOW UNDER WAY ♦ Belmont Parks Main Course Open to Horsemen for Daily Gallops. Work of Beautification Continues with Many Additional Improvements Nearly Completed. NEW YORK. X. Y.. March IS.- New York is on the eve of :i great period of racing, in the opinion of nirf experts, and. with the spring Reason due lo open ai Jamaica May 3. training operation art- now under way at ail of tin- lachey Club rMNM. While the horses had the beacfll of an earlier start last spring, trainers are well satisfied with the condition of their charges at the present time. The nig course at Helnir.nt Park was thrown open To the horses on Tuesday last for the first time this year, Uiat fall most of the nig track and the straightaway received a dressing of manure and the footing lias a new life and resiliency as a result of this treatment. The ground was like a market garden when siipci inicmleiit Pclz let down the harriers early in the week. "A horse could work a mile in 40 over this." said the veteran train -r Tom Welsh as he smoothed the mellow earlli with his foot. "Anil if thia same treatment is used on this and the training track next winter. Helmont Park will he the finest race course in the Tnited Slates." The dressing of manure, along with the top soil which was placed on the main track last year, was exactly what was needed to make the footing friable. The track, however, i- not the only part of Relmont Park to show a -out inu. nice of the policy begun last year to render the course a model of its kind Many handsome- inaple trees have been plained and a new entrance f«1** l.i mg Island juit i-m-. which enables theih to reach ihe upper end of i lie big stand without encountering the crush at the lower gates. Is in the course of construction. Then-is a sweeping curve in order to reach a landing stage within 150 feet of the Turf ai-d Kield Club entrance, and the ground at this point has been planted in attractive fashion. The horses in going from the paddock to the course will pass between a double row of fine maple trees which have been planted the past winter. This will add to the beaut; of this pa* tioti of the property, which it is planned to improve to a still greater extent through 1he medium of landscape gardening. A number of maples have also lieen planted in the rear of the stand and the barren area of sand between the grandstand nnd paddock, so conspicuous las: year, has been seeded down. A vivid green is already showing through the top dressing ol fertilizer. The removal of the unsighlly offices and jockey quarter* to a position beneath the grandstand, and the tinning of the covered paddock at right angles to its present position, giving an unobstructed vista of the heautica of Ihe tardea* and fine old manor house of the Turf and Field rlub. would add to the claim of what is already a marvelous racing property and the public would have ■ more Intimiic retatieaakip with the apart under these conditions. They r aorta* see the jockeys weighed a* they passed I" and fro on their way to the paddock to inspect the horses and their knowledge of the apart would be broadened. RTJKANTELL HANDSOME GROWING COLT Among the horses which attracted attention at Itelmoiil Paik on a recent morning when spring was in the air were the three. yeat -olds Rui.anii 11 f i oni the Widener stable. Pillory and Kirkievington of the Wilson string. Aknusti ami Made of the Gerry a ail Odoin hand, and lttermau and Calantman in the tireeniree Stables suing. The former is growiDX every day and is a haadsome colt, though still a trifle on the UMll side. Pillory is a quality horse and ■ decided improvement on his brother, Dimmexdalc. Be looks and acls like a stayer. Kirk-leington. which was gelded during the winter, has grown into a neat three yea r-old of the English type, being furnished in a way that makes one think of him as a possible successor to Porn Tassel and Yellow Hand, which were also developed by Tom Healey. There was a time last year when some good unites had I high idea of Aknusti as a race horse. He is a Irate Dik Kinnell in type this spring. Lie is a thicker and more lusty colt than Modo. but Hie lailer is an engaging three-yeai -old himself and is bound to more than pay his way this year over H dry track, lie is not a mud runner and was unfortunaie In having B*M of his engagements last year fall du • when Ihe footiug was bad. Payne Whiiuc.. was oni lo eee the Urcentieo pair gallop :.ud ltd wed the keenest interest in all of the horses. Scott Harlan has his charg-s in fine condition. lycMcrman has more size than Oalaiilinau. although he was piobably not the equal of his stable com pa n ion in MCI when ii came to pure speed. It would not be surprising if Letleraian showed a disposition to stay over ■ long distance of ground. »i, d ho will be the hopes of the stable in such areata during the coming aeaaaa. Conspicuous .-Huong Hie two year-olds in ihe matter of looks arc the Widener rati Knightsbridge. by P.iidge of Bar*, and ihe Wilson youngster Wilderness, by Campfire from the P.roomstick dam Genesta rin-y are big enough for any purpose and have a smoothness of finish that will make them friends among those who look for quality in the thoroughbied. Wilderness is a trifle straight in front, but otherwise he is a fine advertisement for Campfire as a stock horse. Knighsbi idge WSJ bought at the Knglish sales by T ni Welsh to keep ■pettier yearling company on the trip across the Allanlic. A big colt by Mont dOr from the jumping inure Valentine, also in the Widener stable, is a racy looking fellow, and so is Shut f lealong. a black colt, by I awe Mdaike. from Rlack Brocade. Of the alder horses thai r p like schoolboys and show their delight at la-ing alive and in the open were Naturalist and tai—ful. a pair of mighty fast horses. The former is as big as a baffiulloi k but he runs high and will he ready to Hhike n crack at the best of them in the Paumonok Blaiidii up and other events at Jamaica, a course Krhere the old Kreitchinau has run some of his hesi races. Careful is being pointed for Havre de Brace, and is almost fit now. Tom Healey has her in splendid condition and this smart daughter of Wr.ik, which was one- sold for S3IKI. has developed into an exceedingly handsome mare. She has length and iitiality and ought to make a i great bread mare wheal her racing days are over. Than is no more enjoyable recreation than a i morning with the horses and the local eaaaraaa » are of such easy access that it is surprising that t a larger attendance is not out to see the mornim. . gallops, which are now in full sway.
