A ., WOODLAWN VASE ONCE MORE H. P. Whitney Adds Historic Trophy to the Preakness for Fourth Successive Year. The historic Woodlawn Vase, a turf trophy with a history covering more than half a century, wMeh was won by Harry Payne Whitney wih Broom-spun in the Preakness last year, has been added to the $."0.000 Maryland stake again this year, according to announcement Thursday. The trophy was first added to the Preakness in 191s when Thomas P. Clyde, who then owned the vase, donated it under certain conditions These conditions provided that the winner of the vase coud hold it for one year and could then add it to any stake run over a long distance of ground and endowed with a I least 2£gft in added money. Because of the fact that the Preakness was divided into two sections in 1918. the cup was not claimed by eiher of the winning owners. Consequently thc first contest for the vase under the new conditions took place in 1919. The Preakness of that year was won by Sir Barton, carrying the colors of J K I. Boss and the Montreal owner took the trophy with him to his home in Canada. When the Preakness date approached in 1920 Commander Ross anounced that he would add the vase to the Preakness as in the previous year. The champion Man o War area tlie trophy for Samuel D. Itiddle that year and in 1921 Mr. Riddle in turn acicbd the Weaafowi Vase to the Preakness.
