Mex., April B. — Three noses, three head . a half length and a length and a half. These were the winning margins at the border course yesterday, and there was a lot of punch in these linislies. Befoei post rime for any race it was : not predicted that a thiill would be furnished. As matter of fact the quality of horses performing were not the hest at the track by any means, but they came driving home like champions, in nearly every iustanre there being duels of speed and stamina decided in the stretch, and even in the last few strides. It was by a head that Mannikin II.. running in the colors of H. W. Ijotr. got up to win the feature of the afternoon. This was ar one and one-eighth miles, aud the victory stamps thhl gelding as one to be feared in his present form. There was heavy backing for Vie. but the best the Walerv.ile filly could do was to take the small end of the purse. Water Willow, second choice, was second. Mannikin II. challenged Water Willow in the stretch and victory was accomplished when he proved Hie gamer in the last few strides. The winner paid 1 he liberal price of ss.o to -si. The lightly weighted Sample, from the San Diego Sl.ibie was fivea a rousing tide by jockey P. Hum and just did last ii out to beat Mike Daly a aaac in the uext race, which was at one aud one-sixteeata miles. Sample made all the pace, bill at no part of the contest did he raw- much of .1 lead, and at the end was a tired and jaded thoroughbred. Mike Daly, as is usual in his manner of BBC-lag, raase from fir back and was rapidly overhauling the winner as they Beared the end. Sam Hill finished third. The favorite. Here Judge David took the lead when lounding the far turn and managed to hold enough advantage to score by Ihe smallest margins from Pierrot. Alma l: w:is iii third position. Ii remained for the eighth race 10 furnish the longest-priced winner of the afternoon and in this there was a general upset, for neither the first nor second ciion-e was near any part ot the money.
