SOME ITEMS OF COMMENT Brcokdale Stud Enriched — Heavy Backing for E. R. Bradleys Busy American. The success of Enchantment in the first race of the Havre de Grace meeting must have been pleasing to Mr. Whitney. He has been giving his two young sons of Spearmint. Chicle and Johren, a good chance in his famous stud. The commingling of the stout and staying blood of Spearmint, Carbine and Musket with Brookdales precious resources in the lines of Bramble, Hanover and Domino, may have far-reaching effects. The victory of the first daughter of Chicle starting in a race is a cheerful augury of something in that line. The really remarkable brood mare Horton-sia added another to the long list of winners she has sent to the races when Adventuress scored in her first race. Hortensia has thrown no real star of the track so far, but all of her sons and daughters have been well gifted with speed and useful servants to their masters. One of the interesting features of speculation over the Kentucky Derby is the way the price against 10. R. Bradleys Busy American has been hammered down from 100 to 1 to 15 to 1, This son of North Star HI. and Breathing Spell is well bred enough to do anything; but he has never started in a race and backing him is guessing. But owner Bradley is reported to have said this is his best, and whether he said it or did not is all one to the enthusiasts who believe he did. Anyhow it is an article of faith that the Bradley stable is lucky and good to follow. It must be said that most of the Kentucky Derby and Freakness Stakes candidates, which have raced at Havre de Grace so far, have acquitted themselves in a way prophetic of great racing to come in these big events. The easy victory of Lucky Hour, the fine showing of Dexterous against such redoubtable opponents as Exterminator and Billy Kelly, and the defeat of such a star as Boniface by Olympus, stand out prominently and must be heartening to their admirers. Xor is the commendable racing of Violinist, My Play and Sidereal to be overlooked.
