OUR SUCCESSFUL AMERICAN RIDERS W MILLER V POWERS AND F ROBINSON ONLY JOCKEYS TWICE WINNING PREMIER HONORS IN THE LAST SIXTEEN YEARS TEN LEADERS OF EACH YEAR SINCE 1906 In this country few jockeys last long unless nature makes them small of stature and light in weight after reaching legal manhood Walter Miller in 1906 and 1907 and V Powers in 1908 and 1909 were great horsemen but increasing weight got them both although Powers has kept himself in the public eye as a skillful rider of steeplechasers And so it goes Of our really good riders James Butwell gained his first inclusion in the list often in 1909 but it was not until 1920 that he gained the supreme honor of leading all his rivals in the racing of a year Six times before that he had figured in the first ten and three times in 1909 1914 and 1915 had been third After V Powers no rider led in more than one year until Frank Rob ¬ inson arrived he winning the premiership in 191G and 1918 as well as finishing second to Crump in 1917 1917Those Those conversant with the affairs of racing can draw many interesting reminiscences from the following tables giving the records of the ten most successful jockeys in each of the last
