MAD HATTERS FINE DEBUT His First 1922 Appearance Results in Victory in Kings County Handicap NEW YORK N Y May 6 There were bright skies at Jamaica today and the track had improved to a great extent from its recent drenching The day could hardly be called springlike for there was a chill that made top coats comfortable but the crowd was an immense one almost equaling that of the opening day of the meeting meetingThe The Kings County Handicap was the bright and particular feature and it resulted in a good contest when old Mad Hatter from the Rancocas Stable was returned winner from the Westmont Stables Sennings Park Mrs Louise Viaus Audacious was a rather dis ¬ tant third with C A Stonehams Yellow Hand the only other starter and top weight of the company last lastHildreth Hildreth changed his method of racing Mad Hatter and it was eminently successful The old fellow was saved behind the pace ¬ maker today whereas it has been the usual plan to send him to the front from the first stride Sandy McNaughton equipped Au ¬ dacious with blinkers though he did not wear that equipment in his previous race He sprinted away from the barrier under Clarence Kummers alert riding and set a fast pace while Sande kept Mad Hatter back of him with Sennings Park and Yellow Hand following and that was the order until nearing the threeeighths post It was there that Sande began to move up with Mad Hat ¬ ter while Taplin was stealing upon the in ¬ side with Yellow Hand Sennings Park was going a bit wide but was galloping strongly and it was apparent that he had something left leftShortly Shortly after malung the turn for home Mad Hatter drew alongside Audacious and Kummer went to the whip in a vain effort to hold the command but Audacious was through and Mad Hatter came on steadily and at the end was two lengths clear Sen ¬ nings Park had no trouble taking second place from the tiring Audacious and Yellow Hand which was plainly not up to such a race last of the company companyPREAKNESS PREAKNESS STARS IN ACTION ACTIONThe The threequarters dash for threeyear olds run as the third race vied with the Kings County Handicap for popular favor by reason of the number of Preakness eligi bles among the starters It resulted in the Greentree Stable silks finishing first and second when Galantman was winner and Let terman readily beat F E Browns Hephais ¬ tos for second place William A from the Rancocas Stable under an easy ride by Fator was fourth and John E Maddens Native Land beat home T F Prices Dough ¬ nut the only other starter starterThomas Thomas went to the front with Galantman with the rise of the barrier and under a nice steadying restraint was in second place a small margin ahead of Hephaistos This was the order of the running throughout In the stretch Galantman was showing a disposition to bear out as he tired ana Thomas had to shake his whip by his nose to keep him straight in the final eighth In the meantime Lyke had Letterman close enough to take up the burden should his stablemate weaken badly Hephaistos at all times held the others safe though he lost some ground by swinging a bit wide in the stretch stretchAfter After the finish Galantman was worked out seveneighths of a mile while Hephaistos completed the mile in 1 44 As for William A he received such an easy ride that no line was had on his present condition Fator would not permit him to run and he went extremely wide almost from the start startMuch Much of the interest in the running was lost when Hildreth withdrew KaiSang and Little Chief while St Henry Firm Friend and Bees Wax were also scratched It was meant for a meeting of Preakness eligibles and it was but KaiSang was the one that the crowd wanted to see race raceLetterman Letterman will undoubtedly be the de pendanec of the Greentreo Stable in tho Preakness at Pimlico next Saturday He has filled out and broadened over winter and Scott Harlan has him up to the mark as far as condition is concerned Galant ¬ man another Preakness eligible from the Greentree Stable has grown bigger and gen ¬ erally improved but he is not the colt his stablemate Letterman appears to be beJ J E Madden said St Henry would be shipped to Pimlico Wednesday to start in the Preakness Saturday Native Land will go along in the same car to fulfill his en ¬ gagement in the Pimlico Oaks OaksThe The Rancocas Stable will be represented by KaiSang in the Preakness and there may be one other to carry the white and green for Ine big prize William A has grown taller this year but he has not put on much more beef Paddock report was that ho was touched in the wind but Fator did not permit him to race fast enough to determine whether or net he was so afflicted afflictedPrank Prank Brown will send Hepnaistos to Pim ¬ lico Wednesday and he appears to be about ready for his Preakness engagement engagementC C A Stoneham made his first appearance ot the day He was out to see Yellow Hand perform in the Kings County Handicap
