RELAY WiNS SOUTHAMPTON Defeats IVlodo by a Nose in a Grueling Finish Dunboyne Buns Fast to Capture CaptureDakota Dakota Handicap Morvich Morvichon on Exhibition NEW YORK N Y May 23 Never was there a better punning of the Southampton Handicap than that staged at Jamaica to ¬ day when the Quincy Stables Relay after ajong grueling drive just beat the Modo Stables Modo by a nose The mile and a sixteenth was run in 1 iHi according to tho official timer making it equal tho track record hung out by Sennings Park recently recentlyIt It was an ideal day for racing and there was a big crowd out In addition to the Southampton there was the Dakota Handi ¬ cap for sprinters in which Dunboyne equaled the five and a half furlong track record of 105 and still another attraction was a fast gallop of Benjamin Blocks champion Morvich MorvichGalantman Galantman was added from the Greentree Stable to keep Letterman company in the Southampton and besides the two that fought it out the other starters were the Pelican Stables Oil Man and J J Hertzs FiftyFifty Right after the start Motlo clashed into the lead while Galantman was badly pinched oft on the inner rail and his stable companion Letterman lost some ground by going wide on the first turn turnRelay Relay was right with Modo and beat him to the first eighth post but the Odom three yearold was well lapped on him and they drew out to a lead of a couple of lengths from FiftyFifty Letterman was slow to find his racing speed and was going wide while the pinching off of Galantman cost him considerableg round though they both headed Oil Man ManTERRIFIC TERRIFIC STRETCH STRUGGLE STRUGGLEThrough Through the backstretch Relay and Modo raced closely bunched and there was little to choose between the pair FiftyFifty was a full three lengths before Letterman and Lyke was hard at work on the Greentree Stable colt in an effort to have him close in on the leaders leadersSwinging Swinging for home Modo seemed to have a shade on Relay and an eighth from the finish he had the Quincy Stable colt headed but Relay was not ready to give up and when Ponce went at him again he raced to even teims and in a bitter fight right to the last stride it was Relay that got his nose in front frontWhen When it was too late Letterman began to run and circling around he had no trouble in disposing of FiftyFifty to take third place placeThe The Rancocas Stables Dunboyne equaled the track record when he ran the five and a half furlongs of the Dakota Handicap in 1 05 leading home Harry Payne Whitneys three yearold Rocket Lengths back of them Bud Fishers Muskallonge was third thirdThe The start was a good one but just as the field left Chateau Thierry was cut off and pinched back until she was rather a bad last Rocket had speed enough to take the lean and Lang rushed Muskallonge after him while Dunboyne was in third place and cut side of the other two On the turn out of the backstretch Muskallong ran up close to the heels of Rocket and was knocked back while at the same time Dunboyne circled around him and took up the chase of Rocket The Whitney threeyearold was saving ground next to the inside rail and making the pace a stiff one but Dunboyno steadily drew up until when the stretch was reached they were closely lapped lappedROCKET ROCKET HANGS ON GAMELY GAMELYSande Sande was hand riding Dunboyne but he could not come away when the threeyear old hung on with remarkable gameness and they were locked right to the finish where the old son of Celt got his head in front This stretch duel took the first two out four lengths before Muskallonge and he in turn beat War Mask ten lengths lengthsIt It was after the running of the Dakota Handicap that Benjamin Blocks Kentucky Derby winner Morvich was brought on th track with silks up He was accorded a rousing welcome by the crowd as he jogged up the stretch In company with a lead pony Frank Kcogh had the mount and starting him so that he would have a good run at the post he worked back to the stand in 35 and was galloped out the half in 48 puliing up at the fiveeighths mark markCarmen Carmen Pantages was a good winner of tho opening dash for twoyearold fillies and sha was good enough to lead from end to end Right at the finish she was tired out but waa winner by three parts of a length It 1 Continued on eleventh pace EELAY WINS SOUTHAMPTON Continued from first page was a pretty fight for second place when John E Maddens Watchful Waiting under a hard drive got up to beat Elizabeth Bean in the last stride strideW W R Coes Many Smiles was the winner of the threequarters dash that was tho fifth offering Sherando from the Oak Ridgo Stable finished in second place and third fell to Frederick Johnsons Excelsis Sheran ¬ do was the early pacemaker but when she could not hold her position next to the inside rail she was shuffled back slightly and Many Smiles going into command led for the rest of the race raceAV AV R Coes Canyon was best of a big field of selling platers that faced the starter in the second race At the end he was doing his level best to beat George Petersons Vinncconne while Walter Houses Victor S was third thirdCanyon Canyon began well and had speed enough to set all the pace and Winneconne always held to second place Leaving the back stretch Buxton rushed Monastery up on the outside but he ran out badly just when he was circling around and he lost all chance he might have enjoyed Carmencita waa raced along on the inner rail by Lang and she was right up in the front division to the turnout of the backstretch where she was shuffled back slightly She came again near ing the head of the stretch and was again blocked finally being eased when thoroughly beaten beatenThe The horses of Spaldsng Lowo Jenkins have arrived at Belmont Park Among them was the good filly Polly Ann an eligible for the Ladies Handicap HandicapIt It is probable that the Metropolitan Handi ¬ cap the opening feature of the Belmcht Park meeting Thursday will bring together a field of eight or ten starters Among those that are considered as sure to carry silks are Scnnings Park Yellow Hand On Watch Audacious Smoke Screen Careful Tryster and Thunderclap ThunderclapThe The racing silks of Miss Marie L Mahler were shown for the first time when Carmen ¬ cita went to the pest for the threequarterr dash that was the second offering offeringAlthough Although Benjamin Block the owner of Morvich and l Yed Burlew his trainer have frequently made it plain that the winner of the Kentucky Derby would be reserved for his threeyearold engagements this year there was talk at Jamaica Tuesday of a match with Sennings Park winner of the Excelsior and the Long Beach Handicaps This proposition was generally looked upon as a huge joke among the horsemen in the paddock and there does not seem to be even a remote chance for such a meeting meetingAfter After the victory of Max Hirschs Nassau Monday he was claimed by Frederick John ¬ son for 5100 5100Louis Louis Feustel who has been sick for con ¬ siderable time is back again and his sick horses are also galloping at Belmont Park Oceanic the colt that was taken sick just when he seemed to have a winning chance for the Preakness has recovered and will probably fill his engagement in the Belmont Stakes for which he will be pointed pointedC C A Stonehams Monday Morning a Bel ¬ mont Stakes eligible which has been on the ailing list for some time is back in trailnng Trainer Goldsborough had him out at Bel ¬ mont Park today todayAValter AValter House is sending Sweep By along
