PLUCKIEST BETTOR COMING James White Noted English Turfman to Visit America During Summer LONDON England May 25 James White multiniilllonairo race horse owner and box ¬ ing fan will visit America during the sum ¬ mer He is one of the most remarkable men in this country Fabulous success has come to him after countless ups and downs but it has left him quite unspoiled and he la as approachable and cheery aa when he carried hods of bricks in his native town of Roch ¬ dale Lancashire as a young man He made millions sterling in tho last ten years out of speculations in real estate and the re ¬ construction of corporations A few years ago he acquired the lease of Dalys Theater here from the executors of the late George Edwardes and when he was not satisfied witli the way things were going took over the active management himself and produced a few months ago The Lady of the Rose which has become the biggest light opera success London has known for some years yearsTen Ten years ago he was a fight promoter but boxing does not interest him so much now as does racing He started off by buy ¬ ing Irish Elegance which proved himself over distances up to a mile to be a brilliant handicap horse Irish Elegance is housed now at the magnificent Foxhill Stud Farm and racing stable which his owner bought in Wiltshire a few years ago There he has some twentyfive beautifullybred brood mares maresSome Some of his race horses are trained there but the best of them are in the charge of Harry Cottrill at Lambourn Berks Among many other races this year he has won the Lincolnshire Handicap with Granely and has fairly strong hopes of winning the Epsom Derby with Norseman a gray Rol Herode colt Mr White is known as the pluckiest bettor in England and when he wins tho bookmakers get a nasty shiver in their spinal corda
