BELMONFS OFFDAY CARD Only Three Starters in Main Race Hyde Park Handicap Audacious an Easy Winner Frigate Takes Measure of ofSpeedy Speedy Flying Cloud NEW YORK N Y May 26 What was meant for the best race at Belmont Park today was reduced to three starters by scratches and the other offerings of the after ¬ noon were not up to usual standard of the big Nassau track It was a delightful day for the sport and there was another big crowd considering the offerings It was the Hyde Park Handicap over the mile and a sixteenth distance that was meant for the feature but the only ones to answer the call at post time were Mrs Louise Viaus Au dacious Richard T Wilsons Sedgefield and Harry Payne Whitneys Damask That was the order in which they finished finishedAudacious Audacious was first away to a good start but he almost at once was eased up when Morris went by with Damask SedgefieM began slowly and he was galloping along lengths back of the other two Once in front Morris rated Damask but Kummer could not be coaxed into taking the lead with Audacious and he held the son of Star Shoot under restraint until well into the stretch There he shook up the chestnut and he read ¬ ily went to the front to come on and win easily by a length lengthMarinelli Marinelli saved ground on the stretch turn and under a vigorous drive the Wilson colt finished in resolute fashion until right at the end he beat Damask a half length for sec ¬ ond place placeIt It was a real good race that was provided in the mile dash the second offering of the afternoon when H M Howards Frigate In a long drive was winner by a head from Max Hirschs Flying Cloud while Pilgrim racing for Selby Burch was only half a length further away awayWHISK WHISK STUMBLES AT START STARTThe The start was a good one except for the fact that Whisk stumbled badly and was also cut off giving him scant chance Caligula Frigate and Flying Cloud went out to set the pace with Flying Cloud on the outside The three of them raced closely lapped through the backstretch and on the turn it was natural that Flying Cloud was forced to cover much more ground than the other two Caligula was first to tire and as he dropped back Frigate and Flying Cloud hooked up and they had a real battle for the res of the race raceThere There was a long delay at the post in tho fifth race a six and a half furlong affair for platers for which Avispa was chiefly responsible Finally a good start was ef fected and after Master Hand had sat most of the pace Finality never far from the leader came away in the stretch though right at the end he was doing his best to win from the fastclosing Doughnut with the tiring Master Hand third and Excuse Me a close fourth fourthJohn John Loftus has signed up C Robinson to ride for the Oakridge Stable StableThe The opening race was a threequarters dash for ordinary platers and J L Prices Cum Sah was winner from W V Caseys Cote dOr with End Man from tne stable of F A GOES in third place From a good start Cum Sah took the lead but when Penman rushed End Man to him and made the pace a hot one E Fator eased up the old black and permitted End Man to draw away into a lead of a couple of lengths He was con ¬ tent to race Cum Sah along there to the stretch turn where he roused the old fellow and in a short brush he went to the front At the end Cum Sah was tiring badly and had to be ridden out sharply Cote dOr came with a rush and in a hard drive took second place in the closing strides from the tiring End Man ManMAKES MAKES AUSPICIOUS BEGINNING BEGINNINGThe The Greentrce Stable took a purse in the third race when Canaque the twoyearold son of Ultimus and Marion Casey scored from Morton L Schwartz Golden Rule and John E Maddens Watchful Waiting WaitingThis This was a four and a half furlong dash for juveniles and Crochet and Canaque were the ones to cut out the pace Canaque al ¬ ways had it on the Cosden filly though be ¬ tween poles the filly for a time was showing the way under the vigorous riding of Lang LangGolden Golden Rule bore over to the inside while Watchful Waiting went to the extreme out ¬ side with L Fator Once out there Watchful Waiting closed with a great burst of speed when Lyke after he had both Crochet and Golden Rule beaten eased Canaque until from some parts of the stand it was thought Watchful Waiting would beat the colt home homeBut But Canaaue was safely home by a couple of lengths though there was general surprise when second place was awarded to Golden Rule and Watchful Waiting was only award ¬ ed third Crochet quit badly in the last six ¬ teenth and was beaten three leengths by the Madden filly fillyIlea Ilea the colt which ran such a close second to Pillory in the Preakness is being pointed for the Belmont Stakes He Is training at Benning and Frank Keogh who has ridden riddenjhim jhim in several races is confident that if he goes to the post he will keep Snob II busy i busyi John Loftus has signed up C Robinson to ride for the Oak Ridge Stable
