GREY LAGS 1922 DEBU1 Great Rancocas Colt Makes Tri ¬ umphant Return at Beimont Runs Mile in 136 in Winning the theCentreport Centreport Handicap June JuneGrass Grass Scores Easily NEW YORK N Y June 9 While the rac ¬ ing at Beimont Park today was made up of six overnight contests there was some thoroughly interesting sport and a mile han ¬ dicap that had been christened the Centre port was worth while for the reason that It marked the first start of the year of the Rancocas Stables good fouryearold Grey Lag Ho is named for the Brooklyn Handi ¬ cap and that made his race of today Just that much more important The chestnut son of Star Shoot and Miss Minnie was vic ¬ torious and Hildreth has brought him back to the races a good horse but H M How ¬ ards Frigate made it Interesting for him though he was going away at the end with plenty to spare Grey Lag took up 126 pounds Just the weight that has been as ¬ signed for the Brooklyn BrooklynThe The pace was a killing one from the start and the manner in which Frigate hung on after having forced the pace was noteworthy He was only taking up 105 pounds but he never ran a better race raceFrigate Frigate went right to the front and gal loped the quarter in 23 4 the half In 40 and the threequarters In 110 Through the early stages It was Grey Lag racing on the outside and the lightly weighted Chester brook that went after Frigate while Keogh waited with Gifford A Cochrans Bersagllere while the pace was killing As for Excelsls he was outrun from the first stride and plainly did not belong In such company companyF1IIGATE F1IIGATE HAI GS ON GASIELY GASIELYIt It was not until nearing the stretch turn that Fator shook up Grey Lag and went after Frigate seriously and as they made the turn they were running closely lapped with Frigate hanging on with rare sameness on the inside insideChesterbrook Chesterbrook was tiring of his chase and dropping back while Keogh was hard at work on Bersagliere and the Cochran horse was making up some ground It was not until inside the last eighth that Grey Lag came away from Frigate and at the end he had a couple of lengths to spare but he had to be ridden hard to go by the Howard geld ¬ ing ingThis This race indicated that Grey Lag has an excellent chance to repeat his Brooklyn vic ¬ tory of last year He is looking better bodily than ever before in his career and may be the best handicap horse in training before Saratoga is reached reachedRather Rather a nice band of threeyearolds went to the post for tho mile of the second race and Gifford A Cochrans June Grass was an easy winner from Frank J Farrells Horologe H P Whitneys Prudish an eli ¬ gible for the Coaching Club American Oaks end Sam Louis Leochares II IIWhen When Snob II gave June Grass such a thorough beating in the Withers Jim Evans remarked that he was through chasing the son of Prestige with June Grass unless his colt was in receipt of forty pounds June Grass was an eligible for the 50000 Beimont to be run Saturday but Evans decided to jjo after more modest prizes and meet less opposition that is why he passed up the Beimont and Snob II for this mile and the threeyearolds of lesser note noteAnd And it was not much of a task for June Grass Keogh went right to the front with him at the start and simply rated him along in a good lead all the way to win under re ¬ straint Through the early stages Prudish on the outside of the other three was in sec ¬ ond position but both Horologe and Le ¬ ochares IL were lapped on her until Le ¬ ochares II tired and dropped back before the stretch was reached reachedPRUDISH PRUDISH IS SHORT SHORTPrudish Prudish lost some ground by going wide in the stretch but in the last eighth she was tiring badly and it was apparent that she needed the race She will have to improve greatly over this effort if she Is to give Robert L Gerrys Emotion serious argu ¬ ment in the running of the Oaks the last day of tho Beimont Park meeting meetingFred
