EMPIRE CITYS BEST RACING Grand Finish Between Six Marks the East View Stakes. Devastation Defeats Captain Al-cock by Indies in Yonkers Handicap Crystal Ford Again. YONKERS, N. Y July 22. Stephen Petifs Devastation was winner of the Yonkers Handicap today at the track on the hill and the Quincy Stables Caveat Emptor took the East View Stakes, the bis two-year-old feature. It was the best card that has been offered at the present meeting of the Empire City Racing: Association and its banner crowd was out for the occasion. Both of the features brought thrilling finishes and while the East View was not a truly run race, by reason of the interference that was suffered from by many of the runners, there was a real battle at the end, with the result in doubt to the last stride. In fact, it was a day of close finishes, for in a short three-quarters dash Ten-Lec and Pen Rose finished so closely lapped that only those on the direct line were able to split them apart. The Yonkers was worth 4.720 to the winner, while the East View had a net value of 57,250. To make it a regular Yonkers day rain came while the horses were at the post for the Yonkers Handicap and there was a steady downpour that made the track wet and slippery for the remaining two races. The Yonkers Handicap was at a mile and a sixteenth and after Grey Lag and Pirate Gold had been withdrawn there were only five starters and two of them. Wad Hatter and ICnobbie, raced under the silks of the Rancocas Stable. Captain Alcock was started for the Quincy Stable and he just missed making it a stake race double for that racing establishment. Letter-man, from the Green treo Stable, and Devastation were the other two. REAL CONTEST ALL THE WAY. It was a good start, and Fator rushed out with ICnobbie, while Sande raced along at the tail end of the field with Mad Hatter. Devastation was in second place and galloping smoothly and before the turn out of the backstretch Captain Alcock was alongside of Devastation and giving stern chase to Knobbie. Knobbie was still showing the way as he swung into the stretch, but the other two were closing up on him. Sande was working on Mad Hatter, but the son of Fair Play wa3 running one of his sour races and would not respond. Inside the last eighth both Devastation and Captain Alcock had caught Knobbie, and the fight was on to the finish. Knobbie was first to gie way and the other two fought it out stride for stride right to the finish. Captain Alcock seemed the winner a half dozen lengths from the end. but Marinelli kept Devastation at it and he responded gamely until he had dropped his nose down in front. Knobbie was a length and a half back of Captain Alcock, and Mad Hatter was a rather distant fourth, with Lettennan last. There was a rattling finish for the short three-quarters of the High Noon Purse when Mrs. Louise Viaus Ten-Lec just managed to beat the Triple Springs Farms Pen Rose by the narrowest of margins. As a matter of fact the finish was so clos" that several in the crowd disagreed with the placing. TEN-LECS FIJTE PERFORMANCE. Ten-Lec made the running at a great pace, but Pen Rose was never far away and while Dominique, back of the pair, was running easily, Ten Lec still had a comfortable lean when she swung Into the stretch, but in the last eighth she began to tire and there it was that Pen Rose closed up and Gantner finally permitted Dominique to run freely and he was also gaining in grand fashion. It was a wonderfully close finish for the East View Stakes when Caveat Emptor, from the Quincy Stable, was the winner from Better Luck, while Moonraker, Vigil and the Rancocas Stables Aladdin followed in remarkably close order. There was a short delay at the post, but the start was a good one, with Aladdin first to show. Bud Lerner and Tall Timber were slightly pinched off as they left and Moonraker was in early difficulty. Bud Lerner was repeatedly surrounded when Kummer tried to send him through and Moonraker was shuffled back badly until he had scant chance. Better Luck was finding his way through in gallant fashion, while Tall Timber was being knocked about and there was a bumping and jumbling in which almost everything in the field, with the exception of Aladdin, suffered. Right to the end there continued a jumble of horses and Caveat Emptor won by a neck, while Better Luck took second place from Moonraker by a head, with Vigil only a head farther back. Crystal Ford came back with another good race in the opening mile and seventy yards dash, but he was doing his best at the end to score from Sailing Along, while Vendor was a close third. There were only five starters and Mystic was fourth, with Wayward Lady last. Col. Phil T. Chinn was a visitor at Yonkers. He promises that the yearlings from his Himyar Stud he will offer at the Saratoga sales will be the best he ever shipped from Kentucky. It was in the East View Stakes last year that Kai-Sang was placed winner after having been fouled in the stretch by A. B. Spreckels Runstar, which finished first. The horses to be sold by James Butler at Empire City next Thursday, July 27, are: Hard Guess, Sling, The Sphinx, Blackstonc, Flint, Bargain, Laurels, Primrose Path, Noon Glide, Temptress, Merrymaker, Irish Dawn, Wedding Chimes and Peak.
