SPEEDING UP AT SARATOGA ! Trainers Send Their Horses Along at a Fast Clip Startle in Good Work-Out. SARATOGA SPRINGS. N. Y., July 27. Trainers asked for more speed of their horses on both the main and Oklahoma training tracks this morning, and the best moves here to date were reported. This was especially true of the two-year-olds, and three-eighths in 35 was nothing out of the ordinary. The main course was In better condition than at any time this year, while the training track also showed improvement. Threatening weather caused the trainers to speed up their work, but the rain held off. It rained some this afternoon and the outlook is for heavy showers before morning. Trainer John I. Smith of the H. H. Hewitt stable gave Startle, his candidate for the Alabama Stakes, an excellent work at one and an eighth miles in 1 :59 this morning. The filly ran the first mile in 1:41, and jockey Danny Connelly had a good hold of her at all times. The racing colony was swelled considerably today, most of the new arrivals coming from New York. Among the latest to get In were Joseph P. Murphy, Harry Lau-demann, Ed Garrison, Frank Shannon and James Ackermann. W. A. Pinkerton arrived for his annual visit today. It has been many years since he missed a Saratoga meeting. BAlfCOCAS STABLE NOW COMPLETE. Trainer Samuel C. Hildreth brought the ten remaining members of the Rancocas Stable here from Empire City. Jockey ICarl Sande got in at the same time. Dave Leary also was among the late arrivals. Trainer Jack McCormack brought six horses from New York, while a carload of miscellaneously owned thoroughbreds got in at the same time. Louis Tauber arrived in advance of eighteen August Belmont yearlings which are due in tomorrow morning. Jockey Earl Pool, who recently became affiliated with the Belmont establishment, will get in at the same time. The Nevada Stock Farm Stable, in charge of trainer P. M. Burch, was unloaded here this morning. It numbered twelve head. The John S. Ward-Roscoe Goose combination has leased the old Beverwyck stable on East avenue for the Saratoga meeting. The horses of this outfit will get in Saturday, according to present plans. Jockey Freddie Smith has joined the T. J. Pendergaat stable at the local track. Track superintendent Wm. Clare opened the jumping course on the main track this morning and about twenty-five horses were schooled through the field. The devotees of this branch of racing turned out In large numbers to witness the trials. Trainers William Garth, Matt Smart, James Healey and Tim Donahue all had their steeplechasers out. W. M. Jeffords was among the visitors at the trade this morning. Jockey Wm. Kelsay came in from Empire City. He will ride for the H. C. Fisher Stable here. The main office of the Saratoga Racing Association in the Grand Union Hotel building will be opened Saturday morning. James Rowe, Jr., departed for New York this afternoon on a business mission.
