HIGHEST PRICES OF SALES TO DATE FORT Y-THREE HEAD GO UNDER HAMMER FOR 31,800 TWENTY-FIVE YEARLINGS FROM CLAIBORNE AND ELLERSLIE STUDS BRING 9,300 SARATOGA SPRINGS, N. Y., August 12 It remained for the Claiborne and Ellerslie Studs, owned by Arthur B. Hancock, to bring the thoroughbred yearling sales of the Fasig-Tipton Company up to another high mark for the present season. Twenty-five youngsters from these two establishments went under the hammer for 9,300 last night, while fifteen more, in some of which Hancock was also int2rested, brought 2,500. The total of 31,800 was by far the best this year to date. This is an average of ,295 and it speaks well for the condition of the thoroughbred market. A brown colt by The Finn Kate Adams proved the star of the Hancock sale, he being acquired by Montfort Jones for 2,500. There were only two bidders after him, H. T. Griffin, until recently trainer for the James B. Smith stable, being the other, but they kept things going at a rapid gait for a few minutes. The bids were raised a thousand dollars at a time until Griffin reached the 2,000 mark. Jones raised it 00 and his rival would go no farther. When a bay colt by Wrack Network was led into the ring bids came from all directions. He finally went to the Quincy Stable for 0,600. Those who sought him were Algernon Dain-gerfield, Dr. R. W. McCulley, R. L. Gerry, E. R. Bradley and Johnny Loftus. Like the colt purchased by Jones, this also is a splendid-looking individual and there was little wonder that he was so much in demand. George B. Widener cut into the bidding for the first time this year and his initial purchase was a bay colt by Ambassador IV. Bobolink II., which cost him -,000. This one also stirred a number of prospective buyers to action. Among those who bid on him were V. Vivadou, H. C. Fisher, Montfort Jones and Ral Parr. Widener also acquired a brown filly by Wrack Censure for ,100. Of the forty yearlings disposed of last night only five went for less than ,000 and two of these were from the Hancock assignment. Few of those offered wTere started at less than ,000 and the bids rose rapidly from this figure on. Charlton Clay brought only two horses to the sales this year, but he has no cause for regret as they brought SI 1,400 last night. One of them, a chestnut colt by Jim Gaffney Continue, went to the Greentree Stable for ,100, while the other, a filly of the same color by Jim Gaffney Dolly Higgins, was sold to R. L. Gerry for ,300. The last-named sportsman was quite active in his efforts to get a few good yearlings last night and. he wound up with four additions to his stable at a cost of 0,100. Among them is a bay colt by Jim Gaffney Hindu Dress, for which he paid ,000. J. C. Milam was a strong bidder for this one, but George Odom, acting for Gerry, his employer, outlasted him. Last night marked the second sale for Hancock this year, as he disposed of fifteen Omar Khayyam yearlings on the opening night for 2,200. All told his youngsters have brought G1,500 here, exclusive of those in which he is interested with other breeders. Six nights have been devoted to the disposal of yearlings during the present Saratoga meeting and 17,050 worth have been sold. This is a comparatively high figure under the conditions, as quite a few horses which were considered quite ordinary have been offered. On three of the six nights the totals went over the 00,000 mark. The summary of last nights sale follows: Property of A. B. Hancock. Col. Sex. Pedigree. Purchased by. Amt.
