Maginn Memorial Immense Crowd Sees Racing. FORT ERIE, Ont., August 12. The Iroquois Hotel Handicap, for two-year-olds at three-quarters, was the programmed attraction this afternoon at Fort Erie and "Canada" Jack Adkins saddled the winner for the Kirkfield stable in Arennie, which he recently secured from Jefferson Livingston at Kenil-worth, after a grueling finish with Edward F. AVhitneys Heeltaps, while Donegal, racing for J. Livingston, was third. The race brought out a field of seven to the post and it .was productive of a spirited contest throughout. The start found the speedy Heeltaps showing the way, with Vennie closest in pursuit and Arendal racing in third position, while Sympathy was fourth. There was little change in the running positions until the far turn was reached, where Magic Reed was cut off and shuffled back. Heeltaps was still hanging on with rare courage, while Vennie was lapped with her. Sympathy when entering the stretch showed a disposition to bear out and repeated blows across the head failed to keep her in line. Vennie was wearing .the winner down and at the end had a head margin over Heeltaps, while the latter was but a short nose in front of the fast closing Donegal. Trainer Adkins was called to the stewards pagoda and presented with a cup as a memento of the race by the Iroquois Hotel Company. The card down for decision this afternoon was an excellent one for this track and the secondary feature, the Edward W. Maginn Memorial Handicap, brought out an even better field than the juvenile event. The Seagram Stables Golden Sphere was asked to shoulder top weight in the race, which was at one mile. The English-bred racer was supported with rare confidence by the public and ho justified the support by a sterling race, winning by a safe margin from J. K. L. Ross Finery, while Jefferson Livingstons Firebrand was third. AMBROSE TAKES HIS TIME. Ambrose, who had the mount on Golden Sphere, was content to stay away from the fast pace set by Finery and Despair and it was only through the final sixteenth that Ambrose asked Golden Sphere for his final effort, when he moved up to the leaders and drew away with ease. Finery was used up considerably racing with Despair, and after the race ran away an extra seven-eighths before she was captured. Firebrand was in .early trouble going to the first turn and was crowded by Grace Mayers, and the rider was forced to take him up sharply. He improved his position in the backstretch, but tired badly when the real struggle developed. Despair and Finery staged a desperate duel until well straight- ened out in the tsretch run, where Despair quit. Canadian-breds performed in a handicap which was at a mile and a sixteenth and the winner came from the Seagram Stable, Kings Court, which was the first part of the double. Ambrose had the mount on this one and it was his judgment that at the end was re-i sponsible for the victory. The early pace was established by Pro- cyon and Chloris and at the finish the pvo-verbial blanket could have covered all three. The winner was accorded but weak support in the wagering. The crowd which journeyed to the course this afternoon was of huge proportions and despite the fact that racing was marked by several upsets was of a spirited variety throughout the day. Ideal weather conui- tions prevailed and the track was at its best. Trainer George AValker, acting for the Brookdale Stable, sold the two-year-old Red Top to J. AV. AATiyte at private terms. Jockey II. Gregory has resumed riding, fully recovered from the recent accident to his shoulder. Jockey R. Romanelli leaves for Ottawa at the conclusion of this meeting. G. AV. Atkinson reported that the mare Tailor Maid had not been injured as seriously as at first thought. She will join the stable shipment to Ottawa and be seen under colors at that point, Jockey Petzgold was suspended for the re- mainder of the meeting yesterday by starter Morrissey for disobedience at the barrier.
