SALES BACK TO IMPOSING PRICES ROSSETER AND CEBRIANS YEARLINGS FIND FAVOR AND SELL FOR EXCELLENT AVERAGES IN SARATOGA SALES LAST NIGHT SARATOGA SPRINGS, N. Y., August 17. The West came into its own at the yearling sales last night when the consignments from John H. Rosseters Wikiup Rancho and Edward Cebrian, both Galifornians, were sent into the ring. The first named disposed of fourteen horses for 1,800, an average of 3,700 each, while the Cebrian band of ten brought 34,100, an average of 3,410. These averages were up to the standard of any previous sales this year to date. There was a brisk demand for the yearlings in these two collections .and the bidding was spirited at all times. A bay or brown colt, by Friar Rock Swan Song, from the Wikiup band, proved the topnotcher of the night, as far as price was concerned. He was purchased by the Oak Ridge Stable for 1,000 after a bidding duel between Clendennin Ryan, G. E. Kn3belkamp and Jerry Carroll. Ryan appeared determined to get this colt and when he reachsd the 1,000 mark both of his rivals dropped out. The youngster is one of the best looking shown thus far and elicited favorable comment from all sides when he was led into the ring. The first colt offered from the Rosseter band went to the Oak Ridge Stable for S6,500. Samuel C. Hildreth and Montfort Jones bid on this one, but Ryan proved the best stayer. Another member of this aggregation, a chestnut celt by Friar Rock Make Good, was sold to ths Greentrce Stable for ?5,G00 after a warm bidding contest between Scott Harlan, H. C. Fisher and V. Vivadou. The hcadliner of the Cebrian consignment was a bay or brown colt by Troutbeck Bramble Rose, which sold to the Riveria Stable for ,500. J. C. Milam made a strenuous effort to land this one, but V. Vivadou outbid him. A chestnut celt by Von Tromp Isolation in the Cebrian band brought 4,000, with R. L. Gerry the purchaser. In all, forty yearlings were sold last night for a total of 96,250, an average of 2,400.25. The Rosseter and Cebrian horses made the sales what they were, as the others put up were in little demand. This was especially true of the R. F. Carman consignment. He sent eleven undsr the hammer and they yielded only 6,100, an average of 554 each. The Carman youngsters, as a rule, were very small and auctoineer George Bain had difficulty in obtaining starting bids on some of them. The final one offered had to be passed out because of failure to recaive a bid. G. E. Knebelkamp was one of the most active bidders at last nights sales. He was acting for Joe Brill, Cincinnati sportsman, who sat with him at the ringside. He obtained four yearlings at a cost of SI 1,200, all from the Rosseter consignment.
