OTTAWAS CAPITAL OPINING Fine Attendance Views Pleasing Racing on Dominion Track. 4 Bedstone Vanquishes Finery in the Main Race Under Good Riding by Jockey Ambrose. 4 OTTAWA, Ont, August 23. The Con-naught Park Jockey Club had a splendi-i opening at its beautiful race cours2 across the Ottawa river this afternoon. A largo attendance, made up in main cf prominent people in government circles, turned out to witness the sport. Interesting contests were in order and Canadian owners played an important part in the racing, three of the races being won by horses from this section. The Seagram stable furnished tho winner of the afternoon feature when Redstone beat Finery in rather easy fashion in tho Autumn Purse, a dash of a mile. Redstone began none too well, but was ridden with excellent skill and judgment by Ambrose, who saved ground with his mount on all the rurris. Redstone easily passed the pacemaker, Duko John,, after rounding the far turn and was going away at the finish. LADS LOYE HAS EASY VICTORY. Lads Love made a runaway affair of the. sixth race. Phalaris, which was making his first start in some months, furnished close, opposition to the stretch turn, when ho tired. Mumbo Jumbo set a fast pace in the opener and after leading all the way had a length to spare from Icon. Anmut came from behind in the third race after saving ground when entering the homestretch and just managed to get up in time to beat Blarney Boy by a .nose. Hidden Jewel made a runaway affair of the fourth race and in the seventh race Tho Wag took the lead after rounding the far turn and won going away. Jockey J. Thomas was suspended for three days by the starters for disobedience at the post. MANY IMPROVEMENTS MADE. Many improvements have been made at Connaught Park since the close of the meeting last spring, principal of which has been the remodeling of the inclosure under the members stand, which has been set apart as a mutuel plant for the accommodation of the clubhouse patrons. It Has been constructed so as to avoid congestion and confusion and is pronounced by Mortimer Ma-honey the best and most modern either in Canada or the States. Quite a few arrivals got in from across . the border, among them T. OBrien of New York, Fred Schroeder of Washington and Walter Sloper of Paterson, N. J. J. S. Whatley has received flattering reports from Cuba of his yearling filly by Solomon, dam the fast mare Snow Queen. It is the first of the latters progeny. Whatley announced that he would ship his stable to Havana at the conclusion of the racing season in Canada. Senor Frank Delbarrio was an arrival. He brings flattering reports from Cuba and predicts the greatest winter racing in the history of the island for the coming meeting. Many of the hotels have been remodeled and a big force of men are at work at Oriental Park putting the plant in condition for the opening. Before leaving Cuba Senor Delbarrio purchased land adjacent to Marianao, which adjoins the Armonia Farm, which is owned by Senors Fernandez and Tolon. The Dei-barrio place is known as "Finea Cora. Seventy-eight stalls have been constructed on the place and a half-mile track laid out. This will enable those who summer at the Delbarrio place to get their horses in condition for the opening of the meeting at Oriental Park. The pastures are well watered from three different wells. There are already twenty-five horses on the place, including the stallions War Plume, by Star Shoot Pocatello, by Mohawk. There are also several brood mares, a couple of which were purchased from C. A. Stoneham. Jockey M. Barnes got in from Windsor and has been engaged to do the riding for the W. A. Burttschell stable. Barnes has been out of the saddle since last spring as a result of an accident during the first meeting at Thorncliffe. Sidney Bender left Montreal yesterday to consult with manager Bruen regarding the shipment of horses to Cuba next fall.
