POPULARIZING TANFORAN - Secretary H. Spreckels Plans to Make New Course Year Around Training Grounds. SAN FRANCISCO, Cal.. November 2. Secretary Howard Spreckels of the Pacific Coast Jockey Club is ambitious to make the new Tanforan Park a training ground, where horses will be stabled the year around. That he is succeeding is manifest, judging by the remarks heard on all sides. "How is it so many horses are being, sent to Tanforan, when the racing will not start for three or four months?" is a question asked a dozen times every day. The movement to the track down the peninsula Avas begun by the J. W. Marchbank stable and the example is being followed by quite a number of other owners. Trainer C. C. Van Meter of the Frank J. Kelley establishment has wired he will leave Churchill Downs November 15 with sixteen head. Mr. Kelley is a director of the Pacific Coast Jockey Club and plans to do everything in his power to make the new racing enterprise a success. Even if Chatterton, the fast Fair Play colt, is not among the horses sent out here, the Kelley stable will be one of the best at Tanforan. Chatterton will be one of the chief attractions at the track in the event he is shipped here. Some of the two-year-olds in the stable of the Chicago man of affairs promise to develop into the best sort of three-year-olds and are likely to do something worth while in the early racing at the new course. Racing secretary Robert F. Leighton is kept busy answering applications for stalls. Requests are coming from every section of the country. All of the. directors of the Pacific Coast Jockey Club plan to race at the opening meeting in February. The nineteen yearlings of director A. B. Spreckels are reported to be going along healthily under the care of "Bill" Carroll over at Pleasantton. Rudolph Spreckels youngsters, bred at C. T. Boots Elmwood Stock Farm, are at A. K. Macombers Miramonte track, near San Jose. The Herbert Fleishacker and Macomber strings have been brought here fram New York by trainer Boots. Thomas Fortune Ryan and C. K. G. Billings will ship some good horses to Tanforan the first of the year.
