OMAR KHAYYAM COLT NAMED Mrs. Payne Whitney Finds Apt Cognomen for Recent Purchase in Works of Persian Poet Delving into the pages of Omar Khayyam, Mrs. Payne Whitney, proprietor of the Green-tree Stable, has selected and registered with the Jockey Club the appropriate name The Vintner for the yearling brown son of Omar Khayyam Mary Maud, by Irish Lad, which she purchased at the Saratoga sale of the A. B. Hancock horses in August. The name was inspired by the following passage in the Rubaiyat: "I often wonder what the vintner buys, One-half so precious as the stuff he sells." The vintner was the community wine merchant and grape grower of olden days. He guarded his method of attaining quality in his vintage second only to his life and held it as an almost sacred heirloom to be handed down to his eldest son in much the same manner as he acquired it from his ancestors. The Omar Khayyam colt, which is a sturdy youngster, has been doing well since he reached the Greentree Stable. He will have every advantage of development until he is ready to carry the pink and black silks on the race course.
