In money distributed among "winning owners in 1922 the Canadian racing field showed a slight falling off from the corresponding figures of 1921. In the main this decline in the returns to owners came through the abandonment of far-western meetings in British Columbia. As a rule the big tracks of eastern Canada kept up their high standard of disbursements nobly, although it is questionable whether any of them made profits worth boasting about. Heavy taxation in the way of a drastic per diem assessment and a liberal cutting into the pari-mutuel percentages by the government accounted for this feature. Considering these onerous burdens, the eastern racing bodies stood up to their work gallantly, Devonshire being the only one to show any considerable falling away, while several increased their offerings somewhat. Sticking to its leadership in this and other particulars, the Ontario Jockey Club increased its output to the extent of 5,S90 more than in 1921. The Windsor Jockey Club, Hamilton Jockey Club, Niagara Racing Association, Montreal Jockey Club, Thorncliffe and Dorval showed moderate increases, while Kenilworth, Devonshire and Connaught were the Canadian Associations tracks which failed to reach their records of 1921. However, Canadian racing, taking all its difficulties in consideration, was in a healthy state in 1922 and deservedly in a lofty position in popular favor. K. Tj. Ross was an easy leader of the winning owners in Canadian racing. His stable won for him more than double the aggregate falling to any other owner, although lacking the service of any such outstanding stars of racing as Cudgel and Sir Barton were a few years back. His Canadian total of ?13G,070 speaks eloquently of the opportunities provided by the Canadian turf. Added to what his horses won in the United States it suffices to maintain him in the exalted position he has occupied in American racing since 1918. Second to the powerful Ross stable came the time honored Seagram stable with ,790 to its credit, its top figure for many years. This was a gain of 0,930 over its total of 0,810 in 1921 and was due largely to the excellent racing of several of its young English horses. The Thorncliffe Stable also had a pleasantly prosperous year in racing, its record year, in fact. Its increase in stable earnings from 2,965 in 1921 to 5,145 in 1922 is ample testimony to this agreeable high tide in the stables affairs that landed it in third place. The widely traveling stables of A. Swenke and A. E. and G. Alexandra fared well in Canada and brought up in third and fourth places. The Kenton Stable and A. V. Thomas followed in order and close together in stable earnings. C. K. Harrison, Jr., did well in Canada with his steeplechasers and completed the list of stables which won more than 0,000. Many American owners took part in the meetings across the border, their good horses contributing in no small degree to the success and interest of the leading meetings. The owners whose horses won ,000 or , more in the Canadian field were the following: , 1 Owner. 1st. 2d. 3d. Amt. Ross, J. K. Fierceness in competition is suggested forcibly in the fact that the leading money Avinner of the Canadian field Avas unable to contribute as much as 0,000 to the treasury of his owner. It is really quita remarkable that this is so in view of tha huge total of money distributed. The Seagram Stable had to play second fiddle to J. K. li. Ross among the Avinning owners, but had some consolation in the honor of tha leading money winning horse of the Canadian turf. This Avas the speedy young English four-year-old Golden Sphere, a fine illustration of the kind of stock that made Oliver Goldsmith a highly fashionable sire in England. Boniface, tried and true veteran and now retired to the stud, Avas second to Golden Sphere in money won, with his stablemato Registrar third. That good colt Captain Scott raced nobly before his untimely death and was fourth amonp- the monpy o.irner? I with a few hundreds more to his credit than fell to the nonpariel of the time. Exterminator. This champion did not figure extensively in Canada this year, but did visit Toronto last September and added the valuable Toronto Autumn Cup to his long list of honorably won trophies. The fleet-footed Car- mandate was in great form last summer and , won nearly as much money as Exterminator. Procyon, Prismar, Fair Gain and the fleet j Clly Diadema were the other winners of more than 0,000 in the course of the Canadian campaign. Thore were other horses good enough to cam jm urn anywhere engaged in Canadian racing. Among them were such as Firebrand, Baby Grand. Devastation, Star Jester, . well, the good filly Lilt, Chloris, Eleanor S Wrkist, Kirk Lady, Lady Boss, Heeltaps, Ere-v. Cote dOr, Elemental, Sailing B., Tv on, Tippity Wi tenet. But none of these lied at the end of the racing year. That honor fell to C. Eames and W. Taylor, who finished in a tie in mounts won, with fifty-three to the credit of each. W. Hinphy was not far away from joining in that dead heat with his total of fifty-two winning mounts and was the best rider of the trio, as his fine percentage testifies. Clarence Turner did some good riding for J. K. L. Ross and also achieved a noteworthy percentage. Eddie Ambrose and John McTaggart showed considerable of the skill that gained them public favor when they rode for leading stables over the New York tracks. It is pleasant to rote that such old timers are doing well. D. Sterling, A. Claver, T. Wilson, J. Wallace, M. Fator. S. Boyle and W. Anderson all rode with a fitir measure of succesa E. Pool made a high percentage In what riding he did in Canarl.w A host of youngsters rode over the Canadian tracks, E. Petxoldt possibly being the best of these lads, although suh a statement is risky and based mainly on what he did elsewhere thar in Canada. The records of the riders who guided one or moro horses to victory in the course of the campaign are presented here Jockey. Mt. 1st. 2d, 3d. trap.
