j 1 1 j I I Leading Winning Stable of 1922 For the second time in succession the powerful Rancocas Stable heads the winning owners of North America. In part this is due to the prowess of the stables excellent race horses and in part to the wizardry of their remarkably skillful trainer, Samuel C. Hil-dreth. The total won by the stable was not so great as that which fell to it in 1921, being 39,503, while last year it was 63,500. Some of the difference is accounted for in the fact that Grey Lags infirm legs prevented him from filling many of his engagements. However, the stable won enough to again give it priority over that of Harry Payne Whitney. The disablement of Grey Lag left it to Mad Hatter to figure as the stables chief money earner. Many of the sons of Hastings were self-willed horses and this grandson of Hastings was so a.bundantly gifted with this family trait that he lost races he could have won simply because he would not extend himself and, when in that mood, no jockey could make him do it. However, Mad Hatter was not always ungenerous, as his fine total of 4,250 amply attests. The excellent three-year-old Kai-Sang, not far from being the best of his age, was the sec-; ond best money winner, and the magnificent cripple. Grey Lag, at weight-for-age the best horse of the year, came next. Zev, which may develop into a three-year-old star, was th stables best two-year-old and one that others of his age found a tough customer to beat. He won but little less than fell to Grey Lags speed. The sturdy colt Little Chief, generally there or thereabouts at the finish of his race and nearly always underrated, completed the stables list of winners of 0,000 or more, the others which won between that comfortable sum and 0,000 being the fine two-year-old filly Edict and the swift-running four-year-old Knobbie. The others which turned in useful contributions to help make up the stables big total are shown in the following display of the records of the horses in the Rancocas Stable of 1922: Horse.
