Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of January 4 1903 Sunday no racing The total money distributed by the tracks of the Uuited States for the year 1902 reached the imposing total of 4662424 The horse ¬ men of this country also participated in the distribution of 189977 in Canada CanadaThat That the richest prizes of the turf are for two and threeyearolds is amply demonstrated by the fact that of the twenty leading winners of 1902 only four were fouryearolds or over Gold Heels Advance Guard Blues and Flying Torpedo the other sixteen being nine three yearolds and seven twoyearolds twoyearoldsTrainer Trainer G W Poole said recently that he would weed out his stable at the Memphis meeting and would ship a carload of the best horses East racing there the greater part of the year He now has twentyeight in train ¬ ing including some promising twoyearolds The best of his older division are Waswift Cambrian Elsie L Flocarline and Sidney C Love Poole sold Ditty and Jim King to his foreman George Forbes and will leave two or three of the cheapest of his string in charge of Forbes A 10000 stake is offered by the Harlem Jockey Club to be run on the opening day of the spring meeting this year This announce ¬ ment was made today by secretary Nathanson in connection with a list of twelve important events to be decided at Harlem during the spring and summer meetings the entries for which close February 18 The 10000 stake is practically a new one although it retains the name of one of the feature fixtures of the Harlem Jockey Club the Harlem Stakes As remodeled the event is built upon the lines of the Brooklyn and Suburban Handicaps and its value is the same as those two stakes until this year yearThe The property on which the Messrs Kcene have built the new stable for then horses quartered at Newmarket England was pur ¬ chased from Lord Rosebcry and is beauti ¬ fully situated as racing quarters on the high street of the town Matthew Allen had ex ¬ pressed himself as dissatisfied with the pres ¬ ent quarters which are situated at Exning a village on the outskirts of racing headquarters Messrs Keene gave him carte blanche to go ahead and find quarters to suit himself and this new stable is the outcome Newmarket is a long straggling overgrown village the main feature of which is the High Street which not only divides Newmarket itself but is the dividing line of two counties Rutland and Cambridge At one end of the village the Bury end or call it town if you will is the main exercising ground the Severals and so on At the other end the Cambridge end is the race course side where Newmarket races are held The finish of the celebrated Cambridgeshire is the nearest approach of the race courses to Newmarket The top of the j Cambridgeshire Hill the finish is where the downs first commence on the Cambridge side of the town Oddly enough on the opposite side of the Cambridge side road to the finish of this big race is the Newmarket Cemetery where so many turf celebrities are now rest ¬ ing
