FLEET HORSES CLASH Some of the Better Class in Fair Grounds Races Maximac Vindicates His Mary ¬ land Form Best Pal Runs Away from His Opponents NEW ORLEANS La January 4 G L Blackfords fouryearold Maximac which came into good racing notice last fall by his sterling performances on Maryland tracks was the outstanding performer in todays racing by his sterling victory in the mile han ¬ dicap featuring this afternoons card He was conceding considerable weight to six other good performers and beat them to the finish in spite of the additional handicap of of a somewhat inferior ride The horse was all over the track and in a rearward posi tion with seemingly no chance of winning for the first half mile But he were his op ¬ ponents down in gallant fashion in the stretch and won by a scant length in good time over a difficult track Copper Demon from which the betting barometer indicated improved running was the contender at the end with Pastoral Swain leading the others While the handicap was the stellar feature the succeeding race which brought out some good ones including Best Pal was also in ¬ vested with considerable interest Olynthus which raced impressively in the New Tears Handicap was the choice of the five starters in this race with Best Pal although re ¬ garded with high esteem the second choice but due to the general belief that he was at a loss in soft going he was neglected by the heavy bettors It was the first start that the colt made in the colors of his new owner S N Holman manager of Maple Heights and other race tracks He raced in his best style and made a runaway race of it winning with the utmost ease his veteran rider Romanelli never being re ¬ quired in the slightest to urge him at any time Going into the lead right at the out ¬ set he increased his advantage with every stride and the finish found him easing up Royce Rools coming with a rush in the last eighth outstayed Olynthus for second place placeGOOD GOOD WEATHER RETURNS RETURNSWith With a return to good weather came im ¬ provement in attendance and betting activity and it made more interesting racing al ¬ though the track was still in bad condition but rapidly drying Horses with an Inner post position seemed to suffer the i most from the track conditions for they were forced to traverse deeper going The winners all won in the middle of the track trackThe The layers continue faring well and breaks for them come intermittently Moon Winks and Al Stebler were a pair that they profited by handsomely for both were neglected in the betting The public how ¬ ever fared better than since the meeting was inaugurated They began fortunately when Radiant in the opener came to the finish an easy leader leaderGen Gen Cadorna mostly because of Lykes presence in tho saddle had the call in the second race but he ran poorly Moon Winks Feodor and Silence beating him himBlue Blue Nose was made favorite in the third race but was beaten easily by Anonymous which led easily throughout Blue Nose was in second place all through the stretch rac ¬ ing ingSupcrbum Supcrbum was heavily backed in the sixth race but any chance she might have had went glimmering when Owens was forced to take her up sharply on the first turn and caused her to be last for most of the race Al Stebler won from Marjorie Wood with Punta Gorda in third place 5 FI3TAL DASH TO LORD HERBERT HERBERTThe The closing race fell to Lord Herbert the favorite which outstayed the improved Bravo which in turn beat Satana for second place placeThe The following notice was posted today In future where notoriously bad actors are en tered on successive days the stewards re servo the right to scratch the horse on the second day upon recommendation of the starter Gentility will probably do no more racing 1 this winter as she came out of her last race l with a badly filled ankle which has decided trainer Vestal to flre her ailing leg and retire her until Kentucky racing arrives arrivesW W S Kilmer lost one of his Sun Briar colts this morning by death deathJockey Jockey Merimee had his license restored today but his riding will probably be con fined to the A G Blakely stable stableJockey Jockey Saladin was given a license tils morning Mose Goldblatt has disposed of Matinee Idol to W D Bernhardt at private sale He will race for his new owner tomorrow tomorrowE E R Bradley intends departing tomorrow 1 for Palm Beach for the winter He has ap ¬ pointed C Bruce Head to succeed him on the horsemens committee with L J Carey suc ¬ ceeding to the cVinfnnnjightp
