Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of Jan 5 1903 I The Worth Jockey Club officials having sus ¬ tained the complaint filed by H F Breivogel against Richard Dwyer report that they have fined Dwyer 500 500At At the regular monthly meeting of the Western Jockey Club the following were some of the decisions handed down In the matter of the controversy between J 0 Keene and A H Zimrner for the services of jockey Grover C Fuller it was decided that the first con ¬ tract to Keene was abandoned and abrogated fby his agent his trainer and foreman during his absence from the country and that the contract with Zimmer is the one now in force forceThe The board of stewards at New Orleans today published the following rulings and recommen ¬ dations For the bsst interest of the turf we suggest that Thomas Hatfield formerly of the firm of Hatfield Ownbey and of Hatfield Ownbey Co be excluded from the grounds of the Crescent City Jockey Club during the remainder of the meeting We further sug ¬ gest that jockey W Hicks who has been on the suspended list be restored to all privi ¬ leges from this date After careful investi ¬ gation of the horse Belvino we find it ad visable to decline permission to jockey F J Landry to accept mounts and hereby suggest that he be refused all privileges privilegesA A New Years visit to the Sheepshead Bay course found the Coney Island Jockey Club grounds to be in grand winter condition The track though covered with slush and snow afforded good footing and many racers were sent to easy exercise over it Trainer Frank McCabe of the Perry Belmont string is a firm believer in track exercise for his string During the morning River Pirate the two yearolds Algonquin Molita and others were sent to easy exercise over the track Mr Bel ¬ mont was present and enjoyed seeing his string work Owner and trainer F A Jones showed his lot in a paddock adjoining his stable They are all in fine condition and in good health healthA A busy rider last year was jockey J Ranch who hails professionally from California but is a Chicago born lad He leads all riders of last year in number of races won and in num ¬ ber of mounts He does not lead in percenta age Buchanan being first in that respect with 2371 Coburn was second with 2368 Domi nick third with 2359 while Ranchs per ¬ centage is 2341 Of the leading riders for the last eight years T Burns and Ranch are still skillful and vigorous jockeys who will ride in this country this year OConnor the lead ¬ ing jockey of 1901 is to ride in France Mitchell in Russia and Martin in England Soup Perkins leader in 1895 is one of the band of outlaw riders now at Newport NewportWhisky Whisky King which to date has just one race to his credit since his advent in the West will be retired temporarily at Memphis and rested up At his best Whisky King would have cut something of a figure at the New Orleans meeting but unfortunately for his owner Captain Winter the Chicagoan who secured him out of the Pepper dispersal sale winter for 4000 the horse had just tlast j begun to show sings of a return to his early lit became known that Whisky King was to 1 be sold he was rather neglected by Colonel Peppers stablehands and that having had some hard races he became musclebound in consequence Be that as it may the colts first race at Roby after coming West was bad and it was not until last Monday when he beat Waswift in a remarkably fast race over a heavy track that he showed anything like his real worth
