GLORY OF MINORITS CAREER Horse Which Won Derby for King Edward VIE Died in Russia Bis Career on the Tnrf Was a Brilliant Snc cession of Good Performances Met MetWith With Only Moderate Stud Success Minoru after being paralyzed the year be ¬ fore died in Russia during 1918 It is curious that this horse and Louviers which he beat by a short head in the Derby of 1909 after a desperate race should both have been sent to that land of chaos As Minoru whose sight became affected in the early days of his fouryearold career is the only horse to win the Derby for a reigning sovereign he deserves further notice noticeBred Bred by William Hall Walker now Lord Wavertree and foaled at the Tully Stud near the Curragh March 16 1906 Minoru was as a yearling leased for his racing career by King Edward VII together with five other Tullybred yearling colts Calderstone La La Moorcock Oakmere and Prince Pip pen and always preferred by that excellent judge Richard Marsh who trained them from the moment they came under his charge at the Egcrton House stables Minoru proved himself immensely superior to the others as a race horse horseHaving Having been satisfactorily galloped before the Epsom Summer meeting of 1908 the son of Cyllene was although starting at 7 to 1 confidently expected to win the Great Surrey Foal Stakes and ridden by Jones he led throughout to carry 121 pounds to an easy two lengths victory over Balnacoil 115 pounds which defeated the favorite Vivid 118 pounds by the same distance for second place placeBEATEX BEATEX BY LOUTTERS LOUTTERSAt At Ascot Minoru 126 pounds was favorite for the Coventry Stakes but after a fine race was beaten threequarters of a length by Louviers 126 pounds and only finished a head in front of The Jabberwock 126 pounds then a smart youngster but this gigantic son of Ayrshire afterward became a bad roarer At Newmarket when slightly preferred in the betting to Battleaxe the pair meeting at even weights for the July Stakes Minoru after leading to the dis ¬ tance changed his legs at the foot of the hill and became unbalanced consequently suffering a neck defeat from the noisy son of William the Third ThirdAfter After this he was not seen until the New ¬ market First October meeting when with ¬ out being fancied the colt made one of those beaten by Glasgerion for the Hopeful Stakes and having at the Newmarket Houghton fix ¬ ture ran a close third under 126 pounds to Promontory 93 pounds and Mauve Patch 97 pounds for the New Nursery the colts efforts for the year ended by his making one of those that Briolet to which he was conceding fifteen pounds defeated for the Chesterfield Nursery at Derby DerbyDuring During the summer of 1908 after his first two races Minoru would not feed well but he progressed most satisfactorily in that and other respects through the winter re ¬ cess and Marsh had him wonderfully fit and forward when the colt came out for the Grecnham Stakes at Newbury For this odds of 11 to 10 were laid on the backward Valens against his nine opponents but Minoru although conceding him five pounds had Lord Carnarvons representative safe a long way from home and beat him easily by a length and a half half3IIXORU 3IIXORU CANTERS HOME HOMENext Next came the Two Thousand Guineas Stakes odds of 13 to S being laid on the hitherto unbeaten crack Eayardo despite it being well known that he had done badly owing to feet and stomach troubles He failed in the race to get nearer than fourth and Minoru having the verdict secure shortly after passing the Bushes cantered home two lengths ahead of Phaleron which beat halfAfter Louviers by a length and a half After this came the evermemorable Der ¬ by which attracted fifteen competitors Sir Martin not long before the start just ousting Minoru from favoritism the final bettinq being 3 to 1 and 7 to 2 respectively with 9 to freey taken about Bayardo which looked in far better fettle than when beaten at Newmarket The race as all the world knows produced a wonderful struggle and when Sir Martin fell just before rounding Tattenham corner an event which caused William the Fourth and Bayardo to be in ¬ terfered with but not to the serious extent some of thoir followers made out Herbert Jones dashed Minoru to the front and rid ¬ ing an admirably judged race just managed by a short head to stall off Stern on Louviers LouviersHalf Half a length off came William the Fourth a neck in ront of Valens which was ham ¬ pered on the rails with Bayardo some dis ¬ tance away fifth fifthThe The scene of extraordinary enthusiasm which ensued when the King the first ruler of England ever to win a Derby went down among the irowd to lead the winner in beg ¬ gars description but is something never likely to be forgotten by all who witnessed it and it was indeed good for the turf that victory resulted as it did no matter what excuses people made for some of their beaten favorites favoritesOTHER OTHER GOOD RACES RACESAt At Ascot Minoru conceded The Story seven pounds and made a hack of him in the St James Palace Stakes and having won the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood from Prester Jack and Verney which were receiving nine pounds and seventeen pounds respectively the son of Cyllene was then confidently ex ¬ pected by all connected with him to win the St Leger Stakes He however quite failed to show his proper form at Doncaster and without once looking like winning only fin ¬ ished a moderate fourth to Bayardo which then at the top of his form again scored with much to spare by a length and a half from Valens which beat Mirador by half a length for second place Nothing was then seen of Minoru until the Free Handicap Sweepstakes at the Newmarket Houghton meeting for which race he was ridden by Mahcr owing to Jones having had an acci ¬ dent while riding Beachcomber two days previously and odds of 2 to 1 were laid on him against three others with the result that he carried his 126 pounds to a neck victory over Electra 120 pounds she beating Cattaro 110 pounds by a head for second berth During 1910 Minoru only ran once starting favorite for the City and Suburban Handicap at Epsom wherein he had to carry 123 pounds but did not display his usual dash and finished no nearer than seventh in the race which Bachelors Double 112 pounds won by a neck from Mustapha 118 pounds poundsWithin Within little more than a fortnight of the decision of the lastnamed race King Ed ¬ ward to the regret of the whole of the civilized world passed away and after his decease Minoru was returned to Hall Walker who did not start him again Minoru began his stud career at Tully in 1911 at a fee of 495 and during the next two years he was covering at the Lordship Stud New ¬ market on the same terms termsIn In tho August of 1913 the same year as Louviers went there his breeder sold Minoru I to tho Russion Government for 183000 j roubles which was then equivalent of nearly 100000 100000The The horse did not have a winner the first year his stock ran but in 1915 Tillywhim an extremely good looking brown filly from the Gimcrack Stakes victrix Lily Rose won the Fitzwilliam Stakes at Newmarkat for her breeder then Colonel Hall Walker in the hands of E Huxley Others to score for him may be instanced in Moravia Roubaix I which did so well in India Russley Secre nissima dam of Selene and a few more less meritorious ones than the abov2men tioned but he was not a great sire Audax in Horse and Hound
