SETTING SUN VICTOR Vanquishes Anonymous in Fair Grounds Feature Race Owner Goldblatt Wins with Be ¬ gum and Demos but Fails Narrowly with Rama NEW ORLEANS La January 16 In the mile handicap which featured todays card a quartet of threeyearolds contested and it resulted in a victory for Setting Sun over Anonymous with Better Times in third place and Admirer the only other starter far dis ¬ tant tantSetting Setting Suns success was in some small part due to Admirer which sharply inter ¬ fered with Anonymous in the first quarter by forcing the Holland representative wide Setting Sun was far back at the time but was enabled by the hampering of Anonymous to race into close pursuit of Better Times and maintaining his speed in good style through the stretch although swerving out held Anonymous safe at the end The latter had to close a big gap but was aided in this by the good amount of ground he saved on the turns He was unable however to over ¬ haul the winner Better Times was far in back of the pair and Admirer ceased to be a factor after he had gone a halfmile halfmileFine Fine weather continues and it was again responsible for a generous assemblage wit ¬ nessing some interesting racing featured by seme close finishes finishesLAYERS LAYERS SUFFER EXTENSIVELY EXTENSIVELYFavorites Favorites and second choices were again much in the limelight they accounting for most of the dashes to the chagrin of the layers who suffered extensively as a result resultThe The success of favorites began in the opener when J T Pendergasts John Q Kelly scored easily from First Blush with Alluring in third place Pelion was in the nature of a good thing but he was done after leading for a half mile mileMose Mose Goldblatts Begum one of the well backed ones scored in the second and it was a lucky win for the filly She was away well while Ghost the runner up began slow ¬ ly and had to work through a rough race He was going fast at the end and got up in time to outstay Kinsman KinsmanHonor Honor Man was made ths medium of heavy backing in the third race but Hidden Jewel coupled with Despair made a run ¬ away race of it Despair was up to his usual bad pest tricks and the start found him wheeling and left Honor Man was easi ¬ ly best of those back of Hidden Jewel wit i The Franciscan taking third place placeThe The Goldblatt connections had desips on three of the races with representativ irom the stable but fell short by inches of making a sweep of the three The failure was duo to Ramas nonsuccess in the fifth race in which he was beaten by Walnut Hall in the last stride The race was at a mile and three sixteenths and it furnished the closest con ¬ test and finish of the afternoon Rama suc ¬ cumbing in the last stride Owens on the winner rode an exceptionally strong finish and it contributed greatly to his success successLUCKY LUCKY FOR DEMOS DEMOSGoldblatts Goldblatts second vinner came in the final race when Demos lightly weighted won from Wylie Demos was the luckiest here for he escaped interference whereas Wylie had to race a wide course on the turns and he came with a belated rush through the stretch to miss the victory by a scant half length Buxom ran a fine race to land in third place placeThe The mile and seventy yard dash fell to the veteran Tom McTaggart which showed one of his oldtime performances and ran all around the others after making a slow beginning and won from Bolster Scourge man the favorite in this had a rough race Sand when running fastest in the last eighth with a chance of winning was badly cut off and knocked out of that chance E Martin who had the mount on Bolster was suspended for ten days on account of strik ¬ ing McDermott with his whip A Goldblatt bought Sam Frank at private terms from M Goldblatt and will race him here John Marklein was an arrival from Detroit during the day to make an indefinite stay here and later go to Havana for a visit there Julius Recdcr today began distributing stable application blanks for the Jefferson Park meeting where racing will begin Feb ¬ ruary 11 and continue until March 17
