Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of January 17 1903 Racing at New Orleans Newport and Oak Mars Cassidy has been selected to fill the position of starter at the Los Angeles race track Mr Cassidy is at present in Washing ¬ ton but it is said by a personal friend that he expected to leave for the coast within the next few days Mon Droit owned by Capt James B Clay of Iroquis Stud Lexington Ky and the dam of Major Daingerfield is barren this year She has now a good yearling filly by Handspring and was bred back to the same sire last year She is by Falsetto Plainfields Barney Schreiber is the proud owner of thirtynine yearlings that he considers equal in merit to the product of any stud farm in the country He has seventeen by Sain eight by Balgowan four by Bannockburn two from Foul Shot All of the above were bred at his own farm but he has four that he purchased at the San Francisco sales this winter They arc by Rubicon The Judge and Reggie J C Milam has received a telegram at Lexington Ky from J S Wadsworth of Gensseo N Y stating that he would ship to him to train this year three twoyearolds by the noted racehorse Nick from the famous mares Komuraski Lady Disdain and Tuttut all of which Milam trained for Wadsworth and gave them their racing records They will swell Milams stable this year to twentyfive horses Jockey Buchanan riding in great form at New Orleans piloted three winners out of six mounts His winning mounts were Ara toma in the first race Lady Walter a first time starter in the second race and Potheen in the last race of the day It looked as though he was going to sweep the card the way he started off but after the second race his efforts were futile untill the closing race when he had the mount on Potheen This colt is owned by Mrs S C Hildreth and waf favorite winning as a favorite should shouldSome Some eastern owner whose name was not made known has his eye on Ed Trotters big sprinter Scorpio The gentleman in question wants the speedy Chorister gelding for steeplachase racing Billy Karrick was commissioned to get a price on the gelding and asked Trotter to name a figure Trotter set a price but as he docs not want to sell the star performer in his stable he named one which he thinks will put an end to the New York gentlemans desire to possess the gelding Scorpio would not be green at the jumping He was raced through the field at Chicago last summer and showed himself to be a good horse at stecplechasing
