NEW AUSTRALIAN RECORDS Gasbag Tom McCarthy and The TheCypher Cypher All Hang Out New NewTime Time Marks for 1922 SYDNEY N S W Australia November 2S Three new Australian time records have so far come out of the sprng racing racingNovember November 9 Gasbag by Demosthenes Lady Celia won the Canterbury Cup at Riccarton Christchurch New Zealand in the remarkable time of 352 for two and a quarter miles The previous Australasian best was Harriet Grahams 353 VI in the Australian Cup of 1917 1917November November 11 at the Ascot course of Bris ¬ bane Queensland Tom McCarthy established a new Australasian record for one and three eighths miles In the 3000 Prince of Wales Plate he beat a good field in 217 dis ¬ placing the previous marks of Mollys Kobe and Fairy Bob Tom McCarthys weight was 129 pounds He is an old gelding by Dorando Miss Oro OroNovember November 11 at the Flemington course of Melbourne the New Zealand bred The Cy ¬ pher which was second in the Melbourne Cup established a new Australian record of 258 for one and threequarters miles The Cypher is a colt three years old by Martian Polymia and carried 107 pounds The crack fiveyearold David was second to The Cypher which won his race easily The record is not an Australasian one Duo a New Zealand horse holds that with 2 57 57The The 1922 Melbourne Cup had 50000 added money and after the deduction of 10000 for second and 5000 for third C L Dubois and R W Bennett owners of King Ingoda received 48120 and a 1000 trophy The sweepstakes of 250 each Was the same as in Carbines year but the first payment was only 10 and the second 25 against 25 and 50 in 1890 This accounts for first money being less this time notwithstanding the nominations were much greater than when Carbine won The total value of the 1922 Cup inclusive of trophy vas 64120 and in Carbines year it came to 66150 the winners share computing value of trophy being 51150 51150King King Ingodas last three races have given Dubois and Bennett 59550 in prize money and trophies of 1000 and 500 Mr Dubois gave 1750 for Ingoda with a filly foal at foot and as she was then in foal for King Ingoda it proved a great investment investmentGLOAMING GLOAMING AND EURTTHMIC EURTTHMICAfter After his win at Wellington New Zealand computations made Gloamings earnings 161705 At that he is still a long way some 14000 behind Eurythmic but there is the chance that the latter will do little j if any more racing Gloaming is also under a cloud at present but being a gelding he has a better chance than a stallion of com ¬ ing to light again againFrom From February 1 1923 all New South Wales bookmakers tickets are to be printed in the government printing office This action is said to be necessarw to check a leakage in regard to the stamping of tickets At present ten or twelve millions of these tickets are being printed outside the govern ¬ ment printing office which also prints 9000000 9000000At At a special meeting of the Australian Jockey Club last week the members assented to the purchase of Warwick Farm for 375 000 and 10 per cent interest annually on that amount for ten years The Warwick Farm shareholders will consequently receive 750 000 The Australian Jockey Club is also giving 50000 cash for 130 acres of the Oatley estate which adjoins the Randwick course courseWarwick Warwick Farm was one of the proprietory courses of which there are many in the Sydney district They are not particularly healthy for general racing and the Aus ¬ tralian Jockey Clubs action removes one of them All are run for profit only and earn huge sums yearly yearlyThere There was a queer occurrence at the Canterbury Park course here last Saturday The going was none too good and nineteen starters were in the twoyearold nursery handicap The riders struck and notified the management that there were too many starters for safety After delay and a man ¬ agerial pow wow the race was divided bets declared off and two races with nine and 1 ten starters from the original lot were con ¬ tested
