TWO KINGS ON THE TURF George IV Outstripped Predecessors as a Turf ¬ man Brother William IV Indiffertnt The American Turf Register of 1831 prints the following which aptly illustrates the re ¬ gard in which the turf was held by royalty at that period periodGeorge George IV outsripped all his royal prede ¬ cessors as a patron of the turf His judg ¬ ment in everything relating to horses was excellent and he was the breeder of firstrate horses among which were Whisky the sire of Eleanor the only winner of the Derby and Oaks OaksWilliam William brother of George IV and after ¬ wards William IV bred upon another cle ¬ ment had no taste for the sport but con ¬ tinued in it for a short time after the dcatli of his brother to run out his engagements In his reign a royal stud existed at Hampton Court and judging from the yearling sales his majesty found that breeding was not a losing game gamePrevious Previous to the first appearance of the royal stud in the name of William IV the trainer had an audience of his majesty and humbly requested to be informed what horses it was the royal pleasure should be sent down Send the whole squad said the king Some of them I suppose will win
