CAREER OF LEAMINGTON Famous English Race Horse Won Many Rich Stakes Abroad Stood at the Head of Thoroughbred Stallions Stallionsin in America After Death of Lexington Died at Age of 25 Years After the death of the great Lexington imported Leamington stood at the head of thoroughbred stallions in America He was bred in England by W Halford He was sired by FaughaBallagh his sire being a son of Hercules and Guiccioli and the win ner of the Doncaster St Leger and Cesare witch Stakes in 1S44 His dam was by Plan toon from Daphne by Laurel LaurelLeamington Leamington made his first appearance on the turf in 1855 as a twoyearold winning the Woodcote Stakes at Warwick After sev ¬ eral unsuccessful runnings at other meetings he carried off the Chesterfield Stakes at the Derby meeting meetingIn In his threeyearold form his first race was in the Epsom Derby for which he had been heavily backed but he was beaten by Ellington He won the Town Plate at War ¬ wick and the Stewards Cup at Shrewsbury and was beaten in six small handicaps For the Chester Cup of 1857 he started second favorite in a field of thirtyfive horses and won with the greatest ease At Ascot he was not placed for the Gold Cup that was won by Skirmisher but at Goodwood with the tremendous odds of 100 to 3 against him and carrying 118 pounds he won the Goodwood Stakes two miles and a half from a field of eighteen among which were Fish ¬ erman Gunboat and Pretty Boy BoyUNPLACED UNPLACED IX CESAREWITCII STAKES STAKESIn In his fiveyearold form he ran unplaced for the Cesarewitch Stakes at Newmarket and did not appear again until he was en ¬ tered for the Chester Cup of 185 when ha was six years old He started favorite at 5 to 1 in a field of thirtythree starters among them Prioress Fisherman Roman Candle the winner of the Goodwood Stakes of the year before Kogerthorpe winner of the Goodwood Cup in 1S56 Polestar Under ¬ hand and many other good horses and won in a canter by two lengths lengthsAt At Ascot for the Queens Gold Vase he was second to Schism and at Goodwin ran unplaced to The Promised Land for the Cup This was his last race for he soon broke down in his training and was sent to the stud For five years beginning with 1860 he stood at Rawcliffes stud paddocks near York but vas not regarded as a successful stallion owing doubtless to his powers hav ¬ ing been overtaxed in his early turf career Among those of note which he sired in Eng iland were Coup dEtat Catalogue Belle I Lady Sefton Leicester Bolero Rebecca Variation Esmeralda Scipio Haymaker and Percussion PercussionPUHC1IASED PUHC1IASED BY It V CAMEROX CAMEROXIn In 1865 Leamington was purchased by R W Cameron of the Clifton Stud Staten Island N Y who paid 7875 for him His i first season was spent in Kentucky at Gen ¬ eral Abe Bufords farm Bosque Bonita Dur ing this season he sired twelve foals among them those great racers Longfellow Lynch burg Lyttleton and Enquirer the subsequent careers of which were as brilliant as those of any American thoroughbreds in the latter part of the nineteenth century j Lyttleton and Enquirer were respectively from Fanny Holton and Lida both of which were Lexington dams His next seasons were spent at Staten Island where he was not successful Eolus Elsie and Inverary being the best of his produce In the fall of 1869 Aristides Welch of Chestnut Hill near Philadelphia purchased him and proceeded to breed him largely to the best daughters of Lexington believing that therein lay his greatest value as a stal ¬ lion His produce matured early and de ¬ veloped rare speed that made him so for ¬ midable in his fouryearold form Among the most famous of his progeny were Reform Netty North Ida Wells Aristides Rhada manthus Lelaps Bob Woolly Parole Faith less Pappoose Iroquois Girolfe Onondaga Lucifer and Mineola MineolaLeamington Leamington died in 1878 unexpectedly at the age of twentyfive He was a horse of great size standing 16 hands 2 inches high and of a dark brown color
