SURPRISES ORDER OF DAY LongPriced Winners Reign Su ¬ preme at Tijuana Saturday Allcdcns Defeat of Carafoosse Fairway and andSpanish Spanish Maize the Outstanding Upset Motor Cop Finally Wins SAN DIEGO Cal January 21 After a remarkable run of successful favorites in which the public choices reigned supreme over the outsiders and which proclaimed Ti ¬ juana a most formful course the worm turned Saturday and the long shots had their inning It was an afternoon replete with surprises in which horses almost en ¬ tirely unlocked for at extremely attractive prices were the ones to show the way first past the winning post to the favorites And when the day was done it was recorded that the following horses at the odds named had been the cause of the downfall of the well backed favored ones Old Homestead 3690 Hackamore 1S20 Alleden 53430 and Do natello 2800 to 1 1Old Old Homestead was the first to upset the form when he took a nose decision in the second race from Miss Dunbar and Review Jockey Slaughter rode him admirably bringing him from far back with a well timed rush to win by an incli in the last stride over Miss Dunbar DunbarHackamore Hackamore only had to toy with his field in the third at an even mile to win his race Taking a long lead while racing around the far turn he left the others far back in his wake and ultimately won by six lengths from Plunger and The Vengeance VengeanceThe The outstanding surprise of the day came in the fifth race a purse event over a distance of a mile and a sixteenth in which Cara bosse the imported crack English mare was heavily supported There were some who were of the opinion that Fairway and Span ¬ ish Maize might take her measure but none looked for Alleden a bush horse to turn the trick but such are the vicissitudes of racing for it was this sort of obscure racing tcol that fought tooth and nail to win by the scantiest of margins from Carabosse The winner set all the pace and when challenged by the English mare he hung on with the tenacity of a bulldog and in a most des ¬ perate finish got the nod in the last stride It was really a twohorse race as Fairway was beaten off third while Spanish IMaize which was repeatedly disappointed scampered home in the last race of the day at a mile and seventy yards a winner over Charley Boy and Fireworth There was much trouble experienced by several of the starters in this race and luckily for Donatello he es ¬ caped the crowding by racing into a forward position While leaving the backstretch he sprinted into the lead and under a deter ¬ mined ride by jockey F Baker the gelding held Charley Boy and Fireworth safe in the concluding drive Both Charley Boy and Fireworth figured conspicuously along with Peace Flag and McGees Pink in the rough j ing which took
