Here and There on the Turf Mile for TwoYearOlds Some Deem the Distance too tooSevere Severe The Lesson of the Walden WaldenStakes Stakes Some turfmen have expressed themselves as being opposed to mile races for two yearolds in the autumn racing in New York Such contests have proved wonderfully popu ¬ lar in both Maryland and Kentucky but it is argued that the test is a bit severe for the juveniles It was also argued that the win ¬ ners of the mile stakes seldom amounted to much afterward afterwardThis This part of it is hardly borne out by ihe records Take the Walden Stakes for instance the oldest mile stake race for twoyearolds that has been run annually at Pimlico since 1907 Its first winner was Jubiles a thor ¬ oughly useful horse but not a great horse The next winner was Trance and she surely made Her mark as one of the best sprinters of her day Fauntleroy was to say the least a useful horse Zeus winner of the fourth Walden was a highclass race horse and is now a successful sire Penobscot winner of the fifth developed into a sensational jumper Ten Point was surely a good horse and he has made good in the stud Superintendent winner of the seventh and Double Eagle winner of the eighth were platers Colonel Vennic the winner in 1915 when Celandria was disqualified was a highclass horse and has made good in the stud Columbine winner of the next year was a good mare War Cloud surely was high class He was a Wal ¬ den Stakes winner and also was a Dwyer Stakes and Preaknsss Stakes winner the fol ¬ lowing year In the Dwyer Stakes he beat such good ones as Jack Hare Jr and Johren War Pennant the one to follow him was fairly good class Dominique developed into a sprinter of high class and he still has that reputation Idb Dell was a thoroughly good mare Relay is one of promise and of course Oui Oui the winner last year has to prove whether she will go on or not notMorvich Morvich won over the mile of the Pimlico Futurity in 1921 and was the winner of the Kentucky Derby of last year while there is no doubt of the high class of Lucky Hour the colt which finished second to him in the Pimlico Futurity FuturityThen Then in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes another of the mile races for twoyearolds which was first run in 1920 On that occa ¬ sion Tryster was winner and he has proved himself a highclass horse Last year he began by winning the Paumonok Handicap and in the fall he was winner of all three of the WeightforAge Seriab at threequar ¬ ters a mile and a mile and an eighth at Pimlico Startle the second winner was a thoroughly good threeyearold This year it was won by Enchantment and he is one that at this time is good enough to go after the Kentucky Derby Among the winners of the Grey Stakes at a mile for twoyearolds run at Woodbine Park in the fall have been such horses as Aldebaran Leochares Hodge Lady Curzon Arravan and Baby Grand was baaten in the race by Our Flag Altogether the ros ¬ ter of the winners of the mile races for two yearolds measures up favorably with the ros ter of any stake race of like age These records do not tend to show that the test is too severe and they rather strengthen the belief that such races could properly be added to the New York entertainment Early rac ¬ ing of twoyearolds is always objectionable but whether or not a mile in the autumn is asking too much of them is at least debatable
