Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of January 22 1903 Racing at New Orleans Newport and Oak ¬ land The stewards at New Orleans have put into force a desirable rule namely that agents of bookmakers will not be allowed in the pad ¬ dock when trainers are giving riding instruc ¬ tions to jockejs If the rule can be rigidly enforced it will do away with a great deal of unsatisfactory talk as to the running of races racesEd Ed Corrigan has bought from Albert Simons the imported horse Corbktts Bay on private terms Corbletts Bay was one of the horses that Enoch Wishard bought in England and brought to this country for John A Drake He raced at New Orleans in the name of J W Berthurum and was claimed out of a sell ¬ ing race and later sold to Simons SimonsStarter Starter C J Fitz Gerald closed two contracts by wire for the coming season One was with the Metropolitan Jockey Club of New York and the other with the Montgomery Park Club Memphis Mr Fitz Gerald has so improved in health since going to New Orleans that he now shows no signs of ever having had the dread fever which so nearly carried him away His work there with the no recall system has been superb and the club and public are alike greatly pleased pleasedC C E Mahone who has P Dunnes former colt Banter in training at Louisville is also anxious to experience the sensation of owning a Derby winner and he has already started with Banter and during the past week the gelding was sent over long gallops in company with the other Mahone horses Banter is by Bassetlaw Marsala and was one of P Dunnes great collection of twoyearolds last spring which included Early the prospective favorite for the Derby this year Savable last years Futurity winner Allan Poqr Boy and others Burns Waterhouses great fouryearold Corrigan met with a serious accident at the Oakland track He was being exercised along with a twoyearold when the latter became frightened and cut across the track carrying Corrigan with him Corrigan was going with such force that he crashed into the fence and turned a somersault over it He was fortunate jto escape with a bruised shoulder scraped knee and back and may not be permanently af ¬ fected as a result of the accident Jockey L Woods who was riding Corrigan was thrown viohntly to the ground and suffered a broken collar bone and other injuries
