TWENTY LEADING SIXES OF 1922 McGee has frequently figured prominently in the list of successful American sires but it was reserved for 1922 to give him the crowning glory of leading the select twenty list As the sire of such a whale of a race horse as Exterminator this honor which has come to him in his declining years was was eminently befitting It has been related of McGee that he is the only male horse ever sired by White Knight However that may be it is certain that when Edward Corrigan brought him to this country from England he brought a real race horse across the At ¬ lantic one which has founded a big family that should figure importantly in American breeding of the future The altogether re ¬ markable Exterminator was his principal money reaper but Firebrand also won well for him Following this pair of principals fiftyfive other of his progeny battled ac ¬ cording to their capacity to help pile up the big total that gave him the premiership Wrack which was sixth in the list last year mounted up into second place in 1922 with Devastation Little Chief and Careful as his principal contributors Wracks position as a virile and successful sire is already well established and he is now represented by a big family A native sire of high degree is Fair Play which also made an advancement in finishing third being ninth in 1921 The prowess of his twoyearold son Dunlin was of great help in this gain His redoubtable son Mad Hatter grew a bit track weary and uncertain in the fall of the year but raced nobly for the honor of his daddy He is amply qualified to become a great sire him ¬ self when his time comes Chatterton was gifted with great speed and ran some excel ¬ lent races But for a throat affection he would probably have ranked higher among the good threeyearolds of the year Celt premier of 1921 brought up in fourth place He had some good twoyearolds in racing and three of them were his best money win ¬ ners with the crack Donges at the head Celts tribe is extensive and good enough to keep him in the envied twenty list for some years Olambala sent the leading money winner of 1922 to the races in the honest but lucky threeyearold Pillory wherefore he is next in succession to Celt Sweep had a big band in action and came next His best representatives were speedy but none was of high class Dick Finnell had his best year with two such good ones as Rebuke and Lady Madcap doing him the most service His fast twoyearold Lathrop may ripen into a fine threeyearold Whisk Broom II was impolite enough to pass above his cele ¬ brated sire Broomstick in the twenty list and in Whiskaway Goshawk Nedna and Cresta had representatives good enough to satisfy the most exacting It beats all how that Ben Brush family keeps expanding and going on onBroomstick Broomstick dropped back from seventh to tenth place and his twi yearolds of 1922 did not promise much Ballots big family included many serviceable campaigners but nothing in the first flight Vulcain had four winners of 10000 or more to his credit and advanced greatly from his next to last of 1921 Of the twenty leaders in 1921 Runny mede Superman Light Brigade Zeus King James and Transvaal disappeared and were supplanted by Whisk Brook II Ultimus Peter Pan Tim Gaffney Marathon and The Finn The lastnamed young sire came into the twenty list with a bang Oceanic Kai Sang Zev and Bud Lerner showing enough to seem to guarantee his staying there with the premier place in sight if he continues to send such flyers into ractng There is no department of the American Racing Manual which offers more food for thought than the following exposition of what the progeny of the twenty leading stallions of 1922 effected in the racing of the year Per ¬ Sire SireMcGee formers Sts McGee Wrack Fair
