Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of January 30 1903 Racing at New Orleans Newport and Oak ¬ land Jockey Mountain also scored a double at Newport The sprinter Jim Clark arrived at Cumber ¬ land Park Nashville Tenn today and joined the Gorman Bauer stable Jockey Redfern rode St Cuthbert and Arachne to victory in the first two races at New Orleans Two seconds were his best efforts in the remaining four races John Skain administrator of the estate of the late James Murphy has sold to C B Hawkins of Midway Ky the sevenyearold bay mare Semper Eaden by Rossington Ssniper Vivent by Jils Johnson for 1000 The mare is heavy in foal to Wadsworth WadsworthW W T McGrath has sold Ben Battle for 2000 and Lady Radnor for 1500 to a western man and both will be raced as jump ¬ ers Ben Battle is a brother to the good horse Jim Megibben raced so successfully by A Shields part owner and trainer of Advance Guard C R Ellison has received word of the death at Memphis of one of his crack two yearold fillies Norma Ellison a sister to Loving Cup named after his wife The filly died of lung fever Ellison bought eight year ¬ lings at the New York sale last summer pay ¬ ing 15000 for them He gave one away and now has six left the band including two or three that he believes to be stake youngsters youngstersJ J R F P Keene have ordered the six mares which recently arrived in this country from England sent to Castlcton Stud and they will arrive there from Messrs Keenes New Jersey training quarters during the week The filly Kate Glover by Kingston Bonnie Gal is a halfsister to Cap and Bells The fiveyearold chestnut stallion Armeath by Enthusiast or Atheling Millcog a recent Keene importation will also come West with the mares to do stud duty at Castleton At New Orleans owner Ketchiman fur ¬ nished the winners of the fourth and sixth races The fourth race was the overnight handicap and the good horse Kenilworth gave away chunks of weight to ah1 the other start ¬ ers and lasted long enough to win by a nose Kenilworth carried 131 pounds in this race the highest weighted of the other starters be ¬ ing Princess Titania with 112 pounds Even with this weight up the followers of form figured Kenilworth best in this race well knowing his penchant for running in the mud
