DESPISED OUTSIDER WINS Halu Surprises Tijuana Patrons by Victory in Sundays Feature Triumphs Over Some of Best Handicap HandicapHorses Horses at Mexican Track Barriskane Barriskaneand and Torsida at Good Prices SAN DIEGO Cal January 29 Before an attendance which furnished just one more brief that the grand sport of kings here is on the ascendancy the despised outsider Halu captured the Petroleurii Handicap which was listed on the program as the sixth race of the card a gallop at one and a quarter miles It was not within the minds of the critical ones that this horse quoted at a liberal price had any sort of a chance with the for ¬ midable Irwin entry This entry appeared not only strong in numbers but it was also rated high in quality It comprised the sen ¬ sational mare Ten Buttons rather good horse Prince Direct and the frequent win ¬ ner Regreso Then there was Tailor Maid winner of her last three starts in handicap company In addition Carabosse a thrilling runner from the Canadian northwest was named to keep them company companyNeglected Neglected and shunned in the wagering and not given even an outside chance by the most liberal of speculators Halu ruled the longest price of the field The Irwin entry was held to the almost prohibitive odds of four to five fiveIt It was a race without any excuses In the far distance they lined up as soldiers on dress parade Starter Harry Morrissey caught them on even terms and the barrier was snapped with the field swinging into Ihythmic motion Ten Buttons was first to show in front and the supporters of the Irwin entry were in high glee as the field swept past the stand standTEX TEX BUTTONS FAILS BADLY BADLYTen Ten Buttons held the lead until the race was at the halfmile post At this point Tailor Maid assumed command with Halu next in attendance It was at this point that Ten Buttons had enough In third po ¬ sition was Buckhorn II In this order the i caller found them at the far turn As they I straightened out for home jockey Rails on Halu asked his mount for his best and he responded and shot to the front and then vic ¬ tory was not to be denied In second place came Buckhorn II which took the measure of Tailor Maid which in turn had enough left to be third ahead of Carabosse Ten Buttons proved a dismal failure on the track which was technically tough and cuppy cuppyThe The heavy and holding track which pre ¬ vailed Sunday was such to test the stamina of the most stouthearted thoroughbred It was a treacherous course that was not con ¬ ducive to fcrmful racing and when the day was done it was recorded that only two favorites had managed to finish in front frontThe The opener a threequarters dash brought together a large band of cheap platers in which Choir Master was returned the win ¬ ner nerHorace Horace Lerch was a wild horse in the second at a mile and seventy yards and his victory was scored in mcst hollow style I C B Irwin gathered hfs daily purse when i San Hedron downed Lariat the pacemaker in the third by an open length lengthSkillful Skillful indeed was the ride given Miss Emma G by jockey Thompson and it brought reward for the filly after being moved gradually passed Rosa Atkin in the i stretch with a well timed rush and won by a length and a half halfBarriskane Barriskane in the fifth and Torsida in the seventh were the surprises that won their respective races at good prices pricesJockeys Jockeys Dean and Wood are feeling the wrath of the starter for disobedience while at the post Dean has been given five days on the ground while Woods suspension is twice that amount amountGeorge George Mayberry trainer for the Clifton Stable received a telegraphic message from J II McKee at New Orleans in which he said he had purchased the good horse Bon Ilommc and that he was negotiating for the purchase of Southern Cross Bon Homme is to be shipped to Tijuana at once and in the event that McKee acquires Southern Cross he will also be sent along in the first carload of thoroughbreds that leaves the Crescent City for Tijuana
