WEDGWOOD IN FRONT Triumphs Over Ballynew in the Main Race at Havana Upsets Frequent Turbulent Sav ¬ ing Followers of Form from a Complete Waterloo HAVANA Cuba January 30 The fourth race which was intended as the feature at Oriental Park this afternoon furnished a splendid contest in which Johnny Millin furnished the winner in the Ballot mare Wedgwood which came from behind in the stretch to get up in the closing strides de ¬ feating the favorite Ballynew by a head The latter set a fast pace from the start leading by a comfortable margin to the six ¬ teenth post where she began to quit C Grace rode a welljudged race on the win ¬ ner putting up a strong finish finishUpsets Upsets were in order during the afternoon Turbulent saved the followers of favorites from a complete Waterloo She was the winner of the opening dash in which Burns rated her off the pace until the final eighth when she challenged and disposed of Faithful Girl and won going away at the end by three parts of a length from Spartina The latter was a head in front of Havana Elec ¬ tric with Faithful Girl another neck away awayCHOW CHOW BY SAFE MARGIN MARGINChincoteague Chincoteague with Prible in the saddle was well backed in the second The favorite was a contender to the eighth post where he followed the pacemaker Refrain closely but in the final eighth both quit and Chow closing fast beat First Pullet by a couple of lengths lengthsLady Lady Frakes after getting away last in the third race gradually improved her posi ¬ tion and won in a driving finish by a length and a half halfMedusa Medusa made a runaway affair of the fifth having a six lengths margin over Abe Sablotasky at the finish Poilu a heavily supported favorite ran an indifferent race and was never able to improve his position at any stage stageMedusa Medusa and Wedgwood winners this aft ¬ ernoon were summered at Huayabal Farm by Roger Minton MintonWalter Walter Carter trainer for the Calmito stable announced that at the end of the Or ¬ iental Park meeting he would ship his horses to Maryland for the spring meetings and then campaign on the Canadian tracks tracksCharles Charles Henry who acted as clerk of the scales and entry clerk during J S Wallace s absence has acquitted his duties in such a manner as to bring high compliments from secretary Nathanson Mr Henry has been a substitute in different positions on various occasions in both Maryland and Canada CanadaMORE MORE AMERICAN VISITORS VISITORSIncluded Included among the visitors at Oriental Park were a number of recently arrived tourists from Buffalo and New York City The party included Dr and Mrs E R Mc Guire George 3 Foreman Charles M Pea body Mr and Mrs C Van Merrick H C Pitcher a banker of Baton Rouge La with Mrs Pitcher and George C Pitcher of Lake ¬ land Fla Mr and Mrs L Whitton of Chi ¬ cago and Mr and Mrs Arthur Lowe of De ¬ troit troitJ J S Wallace who paid a hurried visit to his home in Lexington Ky on account of the serious illness of his mother returned Monday night nightMr Mr N B Updyke a prominent citizen of Omaha Neb and owner of the Omaha Bee and influential newspaper man is enjoying his vacation in Havana in company with Mr G Brandeis a fellow townsman Mr Up ¬ dyke is an ardent admirer of the hcrscs and ho recently purchased a half interest in the horses belonging to the Jones Stock Farm Mr Brandeis who formerly was a leading rotting horseman in the West is now turn ¬ ing his attention to the runners runnersDr Dr Cardenas who is in attendance upon John W Pangle reports his patient making steady progress and expects him to be able to leave for the United States in ten days or a fortnight
