AMERICAN BROOD MARES John E Madden Pronounces Our OurMatrons Matrons the Best in the theThoroughbred Thoroughbred World In discussing international conditions as affecting the thoroughbred industry John E Madden master of Hamburg Place who for six years has led the breeders of the world in producing winners said saidThe The more we see of horses from other countries the more we appreciate those bred here We need not fear competition with the world With the strains we have de ¬ veloped this country will in my opinion eventually become a thoroughbred nursery from which the studs of England France Australia and South America will be en ¬ riched Our climate is unexcelled and we have abundant acreage both necessary fac ¬ tors in bringing the thoroughbred to physi ¬ cal perfection Breeding in this country is proceeding on scientific lines We have the successes and the failures of other lands to guide us and we are not influenced by a narrowness that banishes from the Stud Book a strain that has produced a long line of game swift horses and has furnished the blood in the clams of winners of English Derby Richard Crokers Orby and Herman Duryeas Durbar DurbarHere Here is a point that cannot be too strong ¬ ly emphasized The American brood mare has no superior in the world The success of Rhoda B and Armenia mated to foreign stallions should impress this fact on foreign as well as American breeders We cannot buy the sires that have given such value and prominence to the English thoroughbred although in a Jew fortunate instances like Mr Belmonts purchase of Rock Sand and the importing of Meddler and Star Shoot we have benefitted but England and France can buy in America for a song our brood mares and mate them to their stallions with results that are foreshadowed if not as ¬ sured by the experience of Mr Croker and Mr Duryea
