GOOD RACING IN MUD Fair Grounds Furnishes Its Pa ¬ trons Capital Entertainment Sir Thomas Kean Takes the Chief ChiefRace Race in Fast Time Harry B BBeaten Beaten by Inches NEW ORLEANS La February 10 Qual ¬ ity rather than quantity was the Fair Grounds offering to its big racing patronage this afternoon and it was productive of some great racing even though the track was mud ¬ dy and suited to the more sturdy type of mud runners From a betting point of view the public did not fare well for favorites at short odds were downed in a majority of the races racesThere There was little to choose in the matter of a feature four of the seven dashes bring ¬ ing out some of the best in these parts The mile Business Mens Racing Association Purse with only five to start including Tippity Witchet and Sir Thomas Kean with a possible keen duel between this pair held the most interest but as a contest it ranked far below some of the others Tippity Witch ¬ et had the call but in the early running he was far back with Morris riding in confident fashion Meanwhile Sir Thomas Kean was in close attendance on Crack o Dawn and when the latter showed signs of weakening he raced into the lead and only had to gallop under restraint to the finish to win by as big a margin as his rider pleased Under strong riding Tippity Witchet outstayed Crack o Dawn for second place The mile in 140 3 over the muddy track marked a splendid performance from a time standpoint standpointBAD BAD ALONG INNER RAH RAHIt It was racing suicide to take to the going next to the inner rail but in spite of this some of the riders persistently made their mounts traverse the inner strip with dire results The thorough undoing of Jack Hare Jr favorite in the fifth race was entirely due to attempting to race through the inner part of the track He showed the most speed but was attended closely by Servitor The latter had the firmer footing and left Jack Hare Jr behind after rounding into the stretch In the final drive Servitor man ¬ aged to outstay the poorly ridden Copper Demon with Ainerican Boy in third place placeHarry Harry B in the threequarter handicap was an outstanding favorite over the three others he met including Hidden Jewel and Centi ¬ meter He was the best but succumbed by a matter of inches as a result of Corcorans unpreparedness at the barrier Corcoran of lato has shown badly at the post Harry B might have won even with his bad sendoff had Corcoran not ridden him so extremely wide Hidden Jewel with his good flight of early speed took the lead at once but barely lasted to win Centimeter ceased to be dan ¬ gerous after going the first quarter and was kept in the worst part of the track trackThe The promising threeyearold Shamrock made a show of his opponents in the second race Incidentally he was the only favorite to score He came away in the stretch to win in a canter canterThe The opening dash brought to the post a fairly good band of sprinters and it enabled Mom to win from Camouflage and Spugs Whalebone might have been the winner here but his diminutive rider was unable to help him in the slightest degree degreeTOUGH TOUGH ON SLIPPERY EL3I EL3IEscarpolette Escarpolette won the sixth from Slippery Elm Slippery Elm was best here but Cor ¬ coran again was tardy about leaving the post and the veteran racer was subjected to some interference in the stretch by Har ¬ rington on the winner Day Lily was going well when Abel suddenly took her back and around the others It cost her much ground groundMechanic Mechanic made a runaway of the closing race after having been far back for the first half mile Repeater landed second and Amaze third Loveliness the early leader was mired in the heavy going next to the inner rail railMom Mom changed ownership after the first race G C Winfrey outdrawing W D Bern hart after both had lodged claims for her She cost 2250 2250The The battle for the gold watch offered by the racing association for the leading rider is a keen one between Corcoran and Mein The youngsters were tied tonight with 70 points each Smallwood follows with 42 and Owens with 37 Harvey is next with 36 fol ¬ lowed by Chalmers and Morris with 33 and 31 points respectively respectivelyJ J B Partridge leads the trainers with 29 points and in succession come W A Burtt achell 2C G C Winfrey 25 A Thomas 21 C Phillips 15 and R N VestaJ 14 14Jockey Jockey E Pool who has been ill in one of the local hospitals left there this morning and will probably resume riding Tuesday TuesdayR R J MacKenzie was among the visitors this afternooB
