Here and There on the Turf Aqueducts New Stake Race Will Give Three Year Olds OldsAnother Another Chance TwoYearOlds in a Mile MileRace Race New York is to have another new stake race for the 1923 campaign When the Em ¬ pire City Racing Association announced its Autumn Championship Stakes for all ages there was a general commendation of its en ¬ terprise Now the Queens County Jockey Club is out with a spring stake race that will give the threeyearolds an altogether new op ¬ portunity This race is to be known as the Broadwaj Stakes and like in Mr Butlers of ¬ fering for the fall geldings will not be eligi ¬ ble The Broadway is at a mile and a six ¬ teenth and is a race with 2500 added What is peculiar in its conditions is that only those colts and fillies arc eligible that failed to win a race of the value of 2500 last year Secre ¬ tary Rehberger selected an excellent year for the inauguration of such a race for by reason of the early spring epidemic there will bz many twoyearolds whose winning opportu ¬ nities were limited These came to hand late in the year and for that reason rather than for lack of speed and stamina they will be eligible to the new race Every year it is found that there are back ¬ ward twoyearolds that afterwards develop into topnotch threeyearolds but 1922 proba ¬ bly had more of such than for many a year by reason of the widespread sickness The Broadway will give these colts and fillies an early opportunity and they will not have to meet the more fortunate twoyearolds of last year It is also provided in the conditions that winners of a race of 5000 after the closing of the entries becomes ineligible to start and such winners will be released from the sub ¬ scription fee feeThis This race is framed at five pounds below the scale and the various allowances brings the bottom weight to 104 pounds the impost for maidens Many a good one is eligible to this race and the Broadway is bound to be a tremendously popular race with the horsemen horsemenThe The Broadway with the twenty other stakes that are to be offered at Aqueduct for the summer meeting of the Quesns County Jockey Club are to close March 1 With the addition of this new stake it brings the Aque ¬ duct list to twentytwo stake races for the summer meeting The others are all renewals The big events for the handicap division are the Brooklyn Carter Brookdale and the Queens County Handicap HandicapThe The Dwyer Stakes and Carlton Stakes are the best threeyearold offerings Then for the twoyearolds the Great American Stakes and Trement Stakes arc the outstanding at ¬ tractions tractionsAs As usual there are three steeplechases In this connection it might be said that every indication at this time is that the crosscountry races of 1923 will show a marked improvement in that branch of racing in New York With the closing of the stakes of the Empire City Racing Association there will be further evidence of popularity of mile races for two yearolds in the fall The Autumn Champion ¬ ship Stakes is not a mile for the twoyearolds but it drew a remarkable number of twoyear old nominations John E Madden who demonstrated with both Plaudit and Minute Man that a twoyear old is capable of beating the best of the older horses at a mile has no fewer than thirteen twoyearolds named for the race August Bel mont is represented by a half dozen and Harry Payne Whitney has four in his nominations nominationsAmong Among others who have made twoyearold nominations to the race are Joseph E Widener the Belair Stud of William Woodard the Ran cocas Stable and the Oak Ridge Stable as well as several other sportsmen and breeders The race has attracted the best in each of the age divisions and it gives promise of being a race of real value to the American turf turfThe The fact that this Empire City Race has at ¬ tracted such sportsmen with their twoyear olds affords an excellent line on just what could be expected with other races over the mile distance for twoyearolds Such races have met with notable success in both Mary ¬ land and Kentucky and a like success would probably come to such New York associations as would add them to their fall programs
