Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of Feb II 1903 Racing at New Orleans Newport Ingleside The brood mare Handmaid by Fellowcraft Radab by Glenlyon owner by J R F P Keene has foaled a chestnut filly by Voter at the Castleton Stud Lexington Ky This is the first colt by the noted Metropolitan Han ¬ dicap winner he having been retired to the stud only last spring The Earl of Carnarvon a wellknown patron of the English turf has arrived in this country on a pleasure tour He is the owner of Baldur winner of the Ascot Stakes last year Man hezin winner of the Stewards Cup at Good ¬ wood and Solicitor which was a disappointing favorite in the Lincolnshire Handicap HandicapFrom From late developments it appears that the deal between P J Dwyer and W K Van dcrbilt which resulted in the announcement of the sale of the formers black sixyearold horse Hammock by Hanover Aurania by Virgil never came to a satisfactory conclu ¬ sion and the horse is still the property of tho president of the Brooklyn Jockey Club This was brought out by the arrival of the son of Hanover at Lexington He was taken at once to Hamburg Place where he will at present be located in the stud Being also the owner of Handspring now in the Melbourne Stud of Colonel W S Barnes Mr Dwyer now has two great sons of Hanover now in the stud in Kentucky The stable of Milzs Finlen Son which is quartered at Gravesend in charge of William Hueston brings forcibly to mind the loss to the turf of that ardent sportsman Marcus Daly since most of the horses which carry the Fin ¬ len colors are Bitter Rootbred animals The i majority were bought as twoyearolds at the sals of the Daly horses and needless to say i are bred in the purple Several of them proved to be race horses better than common and one of them Mamari proved herself an ex ¬ ceptionally highclass filly Early in the year she promised to be about the best of the sea ¬ son but unfortunately went lame behind so that she could not do herself justice At that she won the Fashion Stakes also the Criterion Stakes beating such as Biturica and Martie Lewis and conceeding five pounds to every ¬ thing in the race She has wintered well and filled out finely Since the first cf the year betting on the Epsom Derby has taken a wider range Rock Sand is now a pronounced favorite at 7 to 2 taken while G to 1 is offered against his stable companion Flotsam which if he remains sound will be Manors mount otherwise that jockey will be on the favorite Rabelais finds admirers willing to take 6 to 1 freely about his chances while 100 to 8 is on offer against his stable companion King Edwards Mead some prejudice existing against this colt on account of his color being golden chestnut while all the great horses descended from Blacklock sires have hitherto been blacks browns or very dark bays Acefull has been so heavily supported of late that his price haj been cut to 10 to 1 He will of course be Skeets Martins mount None of Mr Keenes horses have been introduced into the quota ¬ tions but as soon as Matt Allen gets busy some move will probably be made in this direction Richard Crokers St Patricks Day has been strongly supported but 20 to 1 is still on offer against him
