FEATURE TO LEFFARE Takes the Washington Birthday Handicap With Ease Hello Pardner Does Some Fouling Foulingand and Is Disqualified Ramkin RamkinWins Wins Another Race NEW ORLEANS La February 22 To ¬ days racing was of the unsatisfactory vari ¬ ety to the speculators with plenty of founda ¬ tion for grumblers to find fault Offending riders came in for censure and a reversal of form was not overlooked in the general indictment Thomas Martin and Roehm were the principal offenders of the riders and LEffares sudden resurrection and vic ¬ tory in the principal race in which he beat some good ones occasioned criticism A dis ¬ qualification resulting from Roehms action in guiding Hello Pardner across the others and in doing so totally destroyed the chances of Biff Bang a pronounced favorite was an ¬ other incident of the afternoon Roehm suf ¬ fered a suspension for the remainder of the meeting for his overzealousness but Thomas and Martin got off scotfree for their lack of skill skillThomas Thomas was astride Radiant a favorite in the second race which he rode wide and lost ground until there was scant opportunity of Radiant overhauling the leaders AVhen he did ride his mount strongly in the stretch Radiant responded with a rush but could only land in third place placeMartin Martin had the mount on Blarney Stone That racer was going fast and gamely in the stretch with a good prospect of being a j dangerous contender for the purse when sud ¬ denly Martin ceased riding and began eas ¬ ing him up resulting in Blarney Stones fail ¬ ure to get a portion of the purse purse1JIG 1JIG HOLIDAY ATTENDANCE ATTENDANCETodays Todays holiday attendance was in excess of what was expected and pleasing racing conditions prevailed The program was a good one with the AVashington Birthday Handicap at threequarters as the especial feature Some wellrated sprinters met here with Translate and Tippity AVitchet the favored ones but Translate proved a dismal j failure although he llaftcred extensively for j a halfmile when he raced in close pursuit j of John Q Kelly and passed him just before j reaching the stretch to rush into a good lead and appear a certain winner but he quit badly in the last sixteenth and was passed in turn by LEffare My Reverie and Tippity AVitchet The winner was making his debut in new ownership having been acquired re ¬ cently by M 1 Reid Thomas kept the horse close up and rode him wide into the stretch but brought him on fast to win with ease My Reverie also showed decided improve ¬ ment and finished gamely Tippity AAritchet might have been closer up but for being taken back in the first quarter and also brought wide into the stretch stretchThe The mile and threesixteenths handicap fell to Ramkin after he had given his sup ¬ porters some uneasiness because of his be ing far back in the early racing but he came j with a rush through the last quarter and overhauled Double Cross in the last twenty yards Aitamin finished third because Mar ¬ tin eased Blarney Stone up in the last eighth eighthTOUGH TOUGH FOR UIFF 1JANG 1JANGBiff Biff Bang was backed into pronounced favoritism in the fifth race with Archie j Alexander also coming in for some attention I Biff Hangs elimination came early when Hollo Pardner came across in front on the first turn Morris who rode Biff Bang was almost catapulted out of the saddle and by the time he succeeded in scrambling back Biff Bang was over a sixteenth back of all j and was only allowed to canter for the re ¬ mainder of the race Duke John displaced Hello Pardner after going a half mile and led to the finish Hello Pardner after drop ¬ ping back came again in the stretch and outstayed Our Birthday for second place The latter though was given second place when Hello Pardner was disqualified and Quesada was placed third Archie Alexander ran a poor race raceThe The favorite backers began badly when Body Guard failed them in the opening race j He was beaten easily by John Joseph which led by a big margin for the entire race Fame was an intended good thing here but he could not maintain a forward position in the early running and came fast when the race was practically over overFull Full o Fun was backed in confident style in the second race and displaced Radiant out of favoritism but Ilillhouse won easily from the pair pairThe The last race found Exhorter installed the favorite but again was woe in store for the backers Dumbfoundcr an extreme outsider leading him to the finish by a good margin AVhite Haven pressed Exhorter hard for sec ¬ ond place The forty layers who operated this after Coutinueil on twelfth pace FEATURE TO LEFFARE Continued from first page of Ramkin favorites were in eclipse and many of the second choices also were beaten soundly
