GREATNESS OF BROOMSTICK H P Whitneys Stallion Estab ¬ lishes Marvelous Record Premier American Stallion Three Tears In InSuccession Succession His Sons and Daughters VIn VInOver Over 1000 Races and 1207332 Among the few stallions commanding a stud of 2500 is Broomstick a son of Ben Brush Elf which has furnished many ex ¬ cellent race horses to carry the silks of his owner Harry Payne Whitney WhitneyBroomstick Broomstick was himself a great race horse as was his sire and his grandsire and all three were great winners great weight car ¬ riers and able to go any distance Ben Brush his sire was a winner of twentyfive races and 65217 and a mighty successful sire leading the American stallion list in 1909 Bramble the grandsire of Broomstick was the winner of more cup races than any other horse on the American turf until the mighty Exterminator came along and surpassed his record in that reripe t Bramble sired a host of good horses including the great Clifford a winner of forty two races BroomsttcKs dam was the imported mare Elf a member of the renowned Agnes family familyIt It is little wonder that Broomstick was and is a successful sire His career is in ¬ deed a marvelous one Retiring to the stud with a record of starting in thirtynine races of which he won fourteen finished second in eleven third in five being unplaced but nine times and accounting for 71570 in stakes and purses Broomsticks first progeny appeared in our racing in 1909 and from then on his fame as a producer of highclass horses grew rapidly In 1911 his name ap ¬ peared among the twenty leading Ameican sires in 1912 he was second on the list and then was the leader for three years in suc ¬ cession in 1913 1914 and 1915 a record not equalled since the davs cf Hanover Ha wis second in 1917 and 1020 and always promi ¬ nent in the other year Altogether in four ¬ teen years 417 sons ana daighfirs of Broom ¬ stick have won 1063 ra js and the magni ¬ ficent sum of 1207332 in stakes and purses pursesAmong Among some of the great race horses Broomstick sire of Sweeper II winner of the Two Thousand Guineas in England Whisk Broom II and Nightstick winners both in England and this country Regret the only filly to win the Kentucky Derby Meridian another Kentucky Derby winner Cudgel Dr Clark Tippity AVitchet Escoba Thunderer Leochares AVildair Broomspun and others othersAVhile AVhile Star Shoot Ogden and other Ameri ¬ can leading sires were represented by a much larger number of their progeny than was Broomstick the offspring of the latter made up in quality what they lacked in num ¬ bers to which the following tabulation is a striking testimonial Broomstick b h 1901 by Ben Brush Elf by Galliard GalliardRaces Races RacesYeir Yeir Performers Won Amount 1000 4 It ISO Totals 14 1053 1207332
