TEN BUTTONS A STAYER Qualifies as LongDistance Racer by Equaling 118 Miles Record Defeats John Paul Jones After Smashing SmashingGood Good Performance Ilcydo Wins From FromCharley Charley IJor and Walter Dant SAN DIEGO Cal February 22 They were shooting at a mark at the Tijuana race track yesterday afternoon and that record was the 1 52 for a mile and an eighth which was made by War Mask when carrying the colors of Clarence Buxton several years ago agoWith With 104 pounds on her back and jockey AVillie Pool in the saddle the mare Ten But ¬ tons from the C B Irwin stable ran the one and an eighth mile handicap the aft ¬ ernoons feature in 1 52 She won by a head from John Paul Jones the favorite and she came back to the judges stand to receive a hearty round of applause applauseThere There were some misgivings about Ten Buttons which was coupled with Prince Di ¬ rect as the Irwin entry being able to go this route She was expected to cut out the pace but it was figured and by some shrewd patrons too that she would tire and John Paul Jones racing in close attendance to her would be triumphant as they ncared the end Part of this forecast was correct Ten Buttons did set the pace and for most of the journey John Paul Jones was in close attendance the only incorrect deduction in the total prediction being that Ten Buttons did not quit John Paul Jones had no ex ¬ cuses He was defeated by a better thor ¬ oughbred yesterday He met with no inter ¬ ference and was urged repeatedly by jockey Claver but he was not equal to the task of quite overhauling the winner In third Prince Direct and Halu the other two in the field never being serious contenders contendersCLOUDY CLOUDY AND CHILLY CHILLYUninviting Uninviting weather conditions it was cloudy witli a chill in the air did not keep down the attendance and another good crowd came over the borderline to watch the thoroughbreds in action Speculation was brisk throughout the afternoon with the public suffering from several upsets upsetsThe The men who follow form were in fine to cash in on the initial race when Woolday a daughter of Smile outfooted her opponents through the stretch and won by a comfort ¬ able margin from the diminutive Emma Waller and Modiste ModisteAgain Again the favorite rewarded when Flame at oddson showed the way to Mr Kruter and Cave Man in the second Jockey Martin waited with the mare until the stretch was reached where he sent her into a safe lead to win with speed in reserve reserveA A large field of cheap longdistance run ¬ ners faced the starter in the third a gallop I of a mile and seventy yards in which Little Gink was installed the favorite He made good under the intelligent ride of jockey E Fator who restrained him until the last quarter where he urged him to the front to win by two and a half lengths from Glenzar and Lucky Pearl PearlThe The reign of first choices came to a halt in the fourth when Colonel Matt failed to i take any part of the purse He was away slowly and never figured seriously in the running First honors fell to Amackassin which at odds of better than 16 to 1 was coupled in the field with Black Pat and Clo ¬ ver Junia He showed a high turn of speed and although challenged by Shelbyville mid j way in the stretch the aged gelding had i enough in reserve to ward off his challenge Continued on twelfth pace TEN BUTTONS A STAYER Continued from first page Norfield ran right back to his last winning race when he took the measure of Athanna in the fifth in one of those brisk finishes which was nipandtuck from the head of the stretch to the end Jockey Pool was up on Xorfield and his skillful handling con ¬ tributed much to the success of his mount As a matter of fact with riders reversed Athanna would probably have been returned the winner Krickson was at the reins of the lastnamed filly but when it came to a drive he was clearly outridden by the crack Kentucky saddle artist artistThe The closest finish of the day came in the seventh race at one and onequarter miles in which Reydo won by inches from Charpy Boy and Walter Dant These three finished almost as one horse Reydo was indeed lucky to win as had Charley Boy another stride to take before reaching the goalpost he would have certainly won As it was he was going two strides to the winners one at the finish The race was marred by the favorite Fireworth He was straight as the barrier was released but jockey Stevens got away pulling up and by the time the field was well in motion Fireworth was far in the rear rearAgain Again in the concluding race the public choice finished in last place This was Irosity which was heavily backed by the majority of the crowd She failed dismally for her speed was lacking and when the field swept past the winning post her colors were trailing in the dust The result of the race proved a bonanza for the books as Philanderer which was hardly conceded an outside chance drove down in front of another outsider Blossom House with Sum ¬ mer Sigh third thirdTwo Two claims were registered during the afternoon The first came in the seventh race when C B Irwin took Reydo for 51000 Irosity was added to the stable of A L Briggs when that owner claimed him out of the last event for JJIIOO JJIIOOMr Mr and Mrs Ed Highly of San Francisco are recent arrivals from the northern city to spend at least a month in the South Mr Highly takes a keen interest in the thor ¬ oughbred and rumors have it that he is here to buy one or more runners of the bet
