WAR ZONES BAD RACE Gets Himself and Owner Dayton Into Trouble Irish Kiss Triumphs Gallantly in inthe the Main Jefferson Park Race Kewpie ONeil Again NEW ORLEANS La February 24 That interest in racing here has not abated in the slightest was proved this afternoon when a record attendance was on hand to view the sport Perfect racing weather was the order but the track was deep in dust and detri ¬ mental to slow beginners for riders and horses were partially blinded The break ¬ down of the water system caused the failure of the springling carts to function Close finishes occurred in several of the dashes and the usual daily quota of upsets enlivened proceedings proceedingsThe The feature race a handicap at a mile and seventy yards fell to Irish Kiss which raced in excellent form and won from Para der after the latter had seemed a certain win ¬ ner at one time Irish Kiss was the favorite despite his 122 pounds while Parader also was extensively backed Going down the backstretch Parader dispossessed Neddam of the lead and when entering the stretch was five lengths in advance but Smith made the blunder at this point of taking his mount off the ridge where the footing was firm into the deep dust next to the inner rail Morris on Irish Kiss continued in the center of the track and the firm going he had enabled him to wear Parader down and win in the last seventy yards Servitor under hard riding managed to land in third place placeKewpie Kewpie ONeil was another successful fa ¬ vorite to get home in front His success came in the fifth race a claiming dash in which he met some fairly good ones His early speed enabled him to rush into a good lead at the outset and racing away from Mom and May Roberts in the first three quarters he drew ayay to win in a canter canterBROTHERLY BROTHERLY LOVE DISAPPOINTS DISAPPOINTSNormal Normal outstayed Mom for second place There was some activity about Brotherly Love but the combination of a slow begin ¬ ner and slow rider coupled with the deep dust that they had to go through proved too much and they were always far in the rear rearOno Ono of the most glaring form reversals of the meeting was shown by War Zone an outstanding favorite in the third race In his preceding race he won with the utmost case running the threequarters in 1 12 the fastest of the present meeting and won from some good ones In todays race he was a laggard all the way and brought up far in the rear His poor showing was further made outstanding by the fact that todays throequarters was run in 113 Colando was the victor over Guvnor with Canyon in third place the latter just beating Ralco for third money War Zone was backed in substantial style by tha public and his dismal race occasioned adverse com ¬ ment mentJ J L Hollands Raffles started the favorite backers off badly when he landed in front of Elizabeth Bean the favorite Raffles under a good ride by Murphy showed the most speed from the start but was attended closely by Elizabeth Bean The latter raced gamely through tho stretch and might have passed Raffles but for Murphys windmill tactics of wielding his whip in front of her This in ¬ timidated her from extending herself to the fullest Fernandos an outsider finished in third place placeANOTHER ANOTHER FOR J It SKIXKEIl SKIXKEIlJ J R Skinker added another purse to his J account by the victory of Poor Sport in the second race He was the favorite and led for tho entire race but had to be ridden hard near the end to outstay Iady Roso The latter finished fastest of all The Colonel i by virtue of saving much ground on the turns landed third There was much support for Felicitous in the race but the start found the horse and rider unprepared resulting in their being virtually left at the post postAfter After many efforts Gentleman Touett fi ¬ nally managed to win a race when he landed in advanco of tho others starting in the mile I and a half dash that closed the days racing j Lord Herbert finished second and Light Wine third Esearpolette was the favorite hero but she tired badly after reaching the stretch i Topmast a highly regarded one lost his rider j soon after the start when he got caught in a Jam JamThe The stewards immediately after War Zones poor showing began a probe and late in the afternoon issued the following Pending further investigation into War Zones race no further entries will be accepted from horses in the care of A F Dayton DaytonThere There were fortytwo layers again this afternoon and they had more business than they could handle
