GRITO DE BAIRE DAY National Holiday Befittingly Ob ¬ served at Oriental Park Proceeds of Saturdays Racing Donated to General Gomez Monument Fund J HAVANA Cuba February 24 Havana celebrated Grito de Baire day with much patriotism It is a national holiday in Cuba and the American Jockey Club provided a special program of seven races for the oc ¬ casion with El Grito de Baire Handicap as the feature The conditions of this race called for threeyearolds at threequarters The Kentucky sportsman T E Mueller fur ¬ nished the winner in Wida which beat Tur ¬ bulent by a length and a half halfThere There was an accident while the horses were at the post when Wida let fly with both heels and landed on Groos who had the mount on Susiana The boy was knocked out for the time being and was taken off the horse and the Cuban apprentice boy Per nia was substituted The mishap caused a delay of eleven minutes at the post and when the field was finally sent away Susiana dashed to the front and set a fast pace until making the turn into the homestretch whero Wida moved up with a rush and took com ¬ mand Yerrat was a bit overanxious ii the stretch run and rode AVida out to beat Turbulent a length and a half Margaret Ware was third thirdIn In order to do its part in promoting suit ¬ able recognition of the achievements of tho national heroes and perpetuating their mem ¬ ory the Jockey Club donated the proceeds derived from todays racing at Oriental Park to the fund being collected for the erection of a mnmnent to General Jose Miguel Gomez This action on the part of the Jockey Club was fully appreciated by the loyal Cubans who turned out to view the races in greatly increased numbers making the afternoons attendance one of the largest of the winter Programs were embellished on Felix M and Bierman in the fifth race the former coming from behind and wearing down the tiring leader just managed to get up in time Bier ¬ man quick to get going beat the others away from the post but was taken under restraint rounding the first turn At tha halfmile post he drew away but entering the homestretch bore out some and lost enough ground to account for his being beaten Guardsman was a tiring third thirdMiss Miss Rankin proved the best in the sixth race Grace did not hurry her and in tho early stages he waited until rounding the far turn before making an effort When called on Miss Stable had the pleasure of seeing his Jim Gaffney colt The Gaff win his maiden race when he beat a band of threeyearolds in the opening dash of the afternoons program Callahaii was forced to put up a rousing finish to beat Courtier by a small margin The Gaff began slowly but moved up with a rush next to the inside rail and at the eighth post took the lead only to tire at the end and was all out to win Bantam closed a big gap and finished fastest of all and was catching the leader at every stride strideAdvance Advance had to be hard ridden through the homestretch of the second race after racing Whispering into defeat to stand off the challenge of Gratian and Colossus in the final eighth At the end Advance led by a scant length while Gratian just managed to beat Colossus by a nose Okaloosa was well supported on the strength of some good trials but pulled up lame lameJ J S Wallace and Charles A Bergin who are in charge of the entries for Lexington Churchill Downs and Latonia stakes mailed the last entries today which is the last day for making nominations for those stakes stakesJohn John J MoGraw who has been resting hero after his strenuous work of winning another worlds series
